07:55:35 -0700 Subject: [PATCH 02/20] product/skills/event-wait: block on pushed events instead of polling for status Adds a reusable skill that waits for one event from a push source with one blocking process per wait, replacing hand-rolled listeners and status-polling loops. The runner attaches to the source first, prints an `armed` acknowledgment the caller must read before triggering the work, sends at most one optional snapshot request, then blocks. A live event is matched the moment it arrives, including while the snapshot reply is in flight, so a completion inside that window is never parked behind a reply that may never come. Nothing asks the producer again: the tests count producer-side requests and assert zero bytes reach a source that declares no snapshot. Two sources ship: a configurable framed-JSON Unix socket (2/4/8-byte big- or little-endian length prefix, or lines) and a read-only JSON stream from a child process, file or fifo. Every selector is a literal field path plus a literal value, so an untrusted producer payload can never become a command, and the wake command is taken from the spec alone. `wait_id` and `receipt_path` are both taken with an exclusive create, leaving no check-then-create gap, and the receipt directory must be private. Each wait cleans up only its own claim. The receipt keeps `event_received` and `wake_delivered` apart, because process output is not proof a chat resumed. With no supported wake mechanism the runner reports `session_wake_unsupported` rather than polling or claiming an unproven path; `source_ready` and `callback_ready` are separate acknowledgments, and a wake with no readiness probe is reported as unproven, not ready. Verified with 35 tests over real sockets and subprocesses, including 20 concurrent waits completing in reverse order without cross-delivery, cancellation isolation, malformed/oversize/truncated frames, disconnects, reuse conflicts and callback failure. Installed into an isolated temporary home and executed through all three harness links. That is the honest +answer when a harness offers no push-wake, and it is required instead of +quietly polling or claiming a wake path that was never proven. + +`wake.mode: "command"` runs an argument list from the spec — never a shell +string, never anything built from a payload. The command sees only +spec-derived values in its environment: the wait id, subject, receipt path, +declared owner, and the matched status, which must already be one of the +declared `terminal_statuses`. The receipt is written after the wake attempt, +so the wake command must read those variables rather than the receipt file. + +Declare `ready_argv` to prove the wake can actually run. Without it the +`armed` record says `callback_status: "unproven"` — armed source, unproven +callback. `source_ready` and `callback_ready` are separate acknowledgments +for exactly this reason. + +**Create and await the wait in the same agent that owns the wake.** A process +handle made by a parent agent is not usable by a child; the child is told the +process id is unknown. Handing the handle down does not transfer ownership. + +`references/harness-wake.md` records what each harness actually supports. + +## Limits this makes explicit + +- Frames and matched records are size-capped; an oversize frame is refused + from its header, before the body is read. +- Errors name a code, a field and a byte count. Continuous unrelated traffic cannot + extend it. +- Malformed JSON, a truncated frame, and a disconnect before a match each end + the wait with a nonzero exit, not a silent retry. +- Delivery is not exactly-once across a crash. A wait that dies leaves its + claimed receipt file behind, which is what makes a reused id fail loudly. +- A synthetic local producer proves the protocol only. Set it deliberately. + +The same page does not say whether this resumes a session that is already +idle. It notifies +outward. It does not push anything back into the session, so it is not a wake +path for this skill. + +Subagent-completion notifications are scoped to a process that the same child +started and awaited. Both remote steps are now written to $WORK_DIR, copied with the release tarball, and run by path -- nothing re-parses them in transit. On a shared channel a neighbour's event id landed in the seen set, so when this wait's own completion arrived under an id that was only ever unique within a subject, it was skipped as a duplicate and the wait timed out on a job that had already finished. Unrelated traffic also evicted real entries through the seen-id cap. The subject check now happens first, for both stream events and the snapshot response, so only our own subject's ids are ever recorded. Test: RoutingTests.test_another_subjects_event_id_never_masks_our_completion fails on the parent commit with outcome 'timeout' and passes here. Worse, the next run started by deleting Invoker.app.old -- so a replace that died after the move left the backup as the only bundle on the Mac, and re-running the fix deleted it. The swap now parks the running bundle at Invoker.app.replacing.$$, checks every step, and only rotates the rollback copy into Invoker.app.old after the new bundle is in place and reads $RELEASE_VERSION -- the same after-check local_invoker already does. A failed move, a failed copy, or a wrong version puts the parked bundle back and writes a fail row; if the restore itself fails the row names the path the one remaining bundle is sitting at. Nothing deletes a backup that is still the only copy. /Applications is now $APP_DIR (INVOKER_APP_DIR overrides it), matching the existing INVOKER_CONFIG/INVOKER_RELEASE_REPO knobs, so the swap can run against a scratch directory in a test. tests/test_cat_mode.py slices the local-Mac section out of the shipped script and runs local_app against that scratch directory with hdiutil, defaults, osascript and cp stubbed: a failed copy restores the old bundle and rows fail, a failed copy with only Invoker.app.old on disk leaves that backup alone, a copied bundle reading the wrong version rows fail, and a good replace rows ok with the previous bundle kept. All four fail against the old script -- three on `row was 'ok\tlocal\tapp none -> unknown'` while cp was reporting "Permission denied". Comments are banned in code repo-wide (engine/hooks/no-comments, twinned by scripts/ci/check_no_new_comments.py); the commit message and git blame carry the story instead. The script's whole usage text lived in the header comment block, and `--help` printed it with `sed -n '2,15p' "$0"`. Deleting the comments would have silently emptied --help, so the usage text moved into a usage() function that prints a quoted heredoc, and --help calls it. The remaining explanatory comments, including the ones inside the two ssh payload heredocs, are gone. Every flag the help test asserts on is still listed, and --skip-invoker and --skip-catstack are now documented where before they were only in the synopsis line. tests/test_cat_mode.py sliced the local-Mac section out of the shipped script by looking ahead to the "# ----- remotes" banner comment, so removing that banner would have broken the app-replace tests; the slice now ends at write_payloads(). The MAX_TOTAL_LINES comment block is restored to its base text -- editing a comment line counts as adding one. A new test_script_carries_no_comments runs the shipped no-comments detector over update_fleet.sh so the next edit cannot reintroduce the failure. A Ctrl-C or a kill inside that window ended the run with the EXIT trap deleting only the work directory, so the Mac was left with a parked bundle and no Invoker.app. The next run could not recover it either: restore_parked_app returned 0 when the path it was handed did not exist, so a park from an earlier pid was never looked for, and a retry whose copy also failed reported "app unchanged" while no app existed at all. Three changes, all in the local-Mac section: - local_app now traps INT, TERM and HUP while a bundle is parked and moves it back before exiting 130, so an interrupt that a trap can see cannot lose the app. SIGKILL and a power cut cannot run a trap, so parked_app also looks for an Invoker.app.replacing.* left beside a missing Invoker.app and puts it back before the next replace starts. A dry run reports that park as warn instead of ok, because it changes nothing and the app is not where it belongs. - restore_parked_app has three answers instead of two: 0 restored, 1 the move failed and the bundle is still parked, 2 nothing was parked. The callers read all three, so "copy failed and $APP_DIR has no Invoker.app to put back" is no longer reported as the old bundle being safely back. - a replace that succeeds but cannot move the park to Invoker.app.old is a fail row naming the park, not a silent leftover. Proof, tests/test_cat_mode.py TestAnInterruptedReplacePutsTheAppBack: four tests that run the shipped functions against a fake /Applications. All four fail on the parent commit -- the interrupt one leaves ['Invoker.app.replacing.'] and no Invoker.app -- and all four pass here. The 101-test tests.test_cat_mode module passes. scripts/ci/check_no_new_comments.py passes; the script still carries no comments, so the usage heredoc gained the line about an interrupted replace. Not run: scripts/test/run_all_tests.sh, which installs Node deps and did not finish inside the sandbox timeout. The remote catstack payload now takes a mode: `probe` resolves the live checkout, reports DIR/BEFORE/DIRTY and PROBE_OK, and exits before the fetch, the pull and install.sh. catstack_on runs that probe under --dry-run and grades what came back -- fail when scp fails, when ssh answers with nothing, when no checkout is found, or when PROBE_OK is missing; warn on a dirty checkout; ok only with a real HEAD to name. Proof: four new tests in TestDryRunNeverMarksAnUncheckedHostOk slice the shipped write_payloads/catstack_on out of update_fleet.sh and run them against a fake HOME. All four fail on the old script (every case returns `ok\thostA\tcatstack: would pull+install`) and pass on the new one; the success case also asserts install.sh never ran.
