Description

@hwhsu1231

Hello PyGMT Team,

I am the founder of the @localizethedocs organization, and the pygmt-docs-l10n project is now published. The following commands are what I used for generating .eps files for each type of logos:

git clone https://github.com/GenericMappingTools/pygmt.git pygmt
cd pygmt
git checkout 3fd34d1afd9efd92d44848e9d320badb7c3ef1b1
conda create --prefix ./.venv --yes
conda env update --file environment.yml --prefix ./.venv
conda activate ./.venv
python -m pip install .
python -c "from pygmt.src.pygmtlogo import _create_logo; _create_logo(theme='light', wordmark='none',       figname='pygmtlogo_light_none.eps')"
python -c "from pygmt.src.pygmtlogo import _create_logo; _create_logo(theme='light', wordmark='horizontal', figname='pygmtlogo_light_horizontal.eps')"
python -c "from pygmt.src.pygmtlogo import _create_logo; _create_logo(theme='dark',  wordmark='none',       figname='pygmtlogo_dark_none.eps')"
python -c "from pygmt.src.pygmtlogo import _create_logo; _create_logo(theme='dark',  wordmark='horizontal', figname='pygmtlogo_dark_horizontal.eps')"

Then, I converted them from EPS to SVG by uploading them to the CloudConvert platform.

To place the PyGMT logo at the top of the README, I need to upload the logo to the localizethedocs/static repository and then access it via jsDelivr. Therefore, I would like to confirm the license of these logos and what attribution is required.

    Based on the documentation, it seems that the current logo was designed by @sfrooti, and it is licensed under the CC BY 4.0 license in the sfrooti/PyGMT-Logo repository. If so, how about the following attribution?

    Code:

    <tr>
      <td><code>logo/pygmt-dark.svg</code></td>
      <td><img src="logo/pygmt-dark.svg" alt="pygmt-dark" width="200"/></td>
      <td><a href="https://github.com/GenericMappingTools/pygmt/blob/3fd34d1afd9efd92d44848e9d320badb7c3ef1b1/pygmt/src/pygmtlogo.py">Link</a></td>
      <td>By <a href="https://github.com/sfrooti">Studio Raada</a>, licensed under <a href="https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/deed/">CC BY 4.0</a>.</td>
    </tr>
    <tr>
      <td><code>logo/pygmt-light.svg</code></td>
      <td><img src="logo/pygmt-light.svg" alt="pygmt-light" width="200"/></td>
      <td><a href="https://github.com/GenericMappingTools/pygmt/blob/3fd34d1afd9efd92d44848e9d320badb7c3ef1b1/pygmt/src/pygmtlogo.py">Link</a></td>
      <td>By <a href="https://github.com/sfrooti">Studio Raada</a>, licensed under <a href="https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/deed/">CC BY 4.0</a>.</td>
    </tr>

    Based on the documentation, it seems that the current logo was designed by @sfrooti, and it is licensed under the CC BY 4.0 license in the sfrooti/PyGMT-Logo repository.

    The original PyGMT logo was designed by @sfrooti and is licensed under CC BY 4.0. The logo was subsequently modified by PyGMT contributors in PR #4616. I guess @sfrooti still owns the copyright if my understanding of CC BY 4.0 is correct.

    Hello @seisman,

    By Studio Raada, licensed under CC BY 4.0.

    If so, then is the above attribution acceptable? If not, then what kind of attribution is required?

    Following https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/deed.en#ref-appropriate-credit, I would say use the name of the creator (Sfurti) rather than the studio name. And since there were modifications made by the PyGMT team, we need to indicate those changes, so maybe something like:

    <td>By <a href="https://github.com/sfrooti">Sfurti</a>, licensed under <a href="https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/deed/">CC BY 4.0</a> / Modified from original by the <a href="https://www.pygmt.org/v0.19.0/team.html">PyGMT Team</a> .</td>

    Sounds reasonable. Currently, the Figure.pygmtlogo API documentation says:

    The design of the logo is kindly provided by @sfrooti

    I think we should also update the docstring to clarify the license.
