Nine written rules were listed on the documentation index and had no home. `/docs/handbook/style/` returned 404, so trimming a rule off its own URL landed on nothing, and the breadcrumb pointed at `/docs/#handbook`, a fragment part way down another page. The filter that builds those trails carries a comment about this, because a trail built from URL segments would link twice into nothing. The index at that URL carries every rule with its own line, and the documentation page keeps a card in place of the list: what the handbook is, and a way in. That is the section down from fifty-two lines to twenty-six, which is the room the SDK reference will want. `sections.json` named the handbook because nothing sat at that URL for a breadcrumb to find. Something does, so the entry goes; leaving it would have put the handbook in a rule's breadcrumb twice, once from the map and once from the page. `id="handbook"` stays on the card, since a link from outside cannot be redirected and should still land somewhere sensible. The page is drawn rather than borrowed. The rules are a grid of cards, made the way the home page makes the areas of the SDK: a hairline showing through a one-pixel gap between cells carrying the section's own wash. Nine divides into three rows of three, so the shape is counted rather than fitted, and each card is one link, the whole cell. The head takes the ring off the logogram, as the other front doors do. A link on the card had been set in parchment on parchment, 1.09:1. The rule that colored it was written for the ink at the top of the page and named only its class, so it followed that class onto a light band. It is scoped to the head now and cannot follow it anywhere. Every pair of colors on both pages clears AA, measured with the translucent panels composited rather than read off the element; the tightest is 4.88:1. A count of what is missing is news and a count of what is complete is not, so the tally and the row of squares appear only when a rule is unwritten, and the card gives the size of the handbook instead. The page also called an unwritten rule pageless. It has a page; what it lacks is the guidance. Both states were checked by marking a rule a stub and building, since neither renders while all nine are written. Compare
The handbook is nine written rules now, and it had no home. This gives
it one at
/docs/handbook/style/, draws it as a destination ratherthan a list, and leaves the documentation index room for the SDK
reference when it lands.
The URL was a hole, not a choice
/docs/handbook/style/returned 404, so trimming a rule off its ownURL landed on nothing. That is not a new observation — the
breadcrumbfilter in
eleventy.config.mjscarries a comment about it, because atrail built from URL segments "would link twice into nothing."
The breadcrumb worked around it through
_data/sections.json, whichpointed "Style handbook" at
/docs/#handbook— a fragment part way downanother page. So that step never went to the handbook.
/docs/handbook/style//docs/#handbook/docs/handbook/style//docs/sections.json's entry is gone. It existed because nothing sat at thatURL; something does now, and leaving it would have listed the handbook
twice in a rule's breadcrumb — once from the map, once from the
page.
id="handbook"stays on the card, because production is GitHubPages with no
_redirects, so an existing/docs/#handbooklink fromoutside cannot be redirected and should still land somewhere sensible.
Drawn, not borrowed
The page first reused the docs index's markup wholesale, so the front
door to nine rules looked like a copy of the page above it. It has its
own
_handbook.scssnow:_home.scssmakes the SDK areas — a hairline showing through a 1px gap between
cells carrying the section's own wash. Nine divides into three rows
of three, so the shape is counted rather than fitted.
.latestis on thehome page.
/docs/gains a panel saying what is behind it — 13 pages, 4 guidesand 9 rules — and numerals on its entries.
A link nobody could read
The card's link was parchment on parchment:
The rule that colored it was written for the ink at the top of the page
and named only
.invite-row, so it followed that class onto a lightband the moment one was used there. It is scoped to
.docs-headnowand cannot follow it anywhere else.
The count says itself only when it is news
A progress meter that has finished is noise. Both pages announced nine
of nine written, in four places between them. The counting stays,
because it earns its place the moment a rule is added and left
unwritten — it is simply silent while there is nothing to report: no
tally beside a heading, and no row of squares that are all the same
square.
The page also called an unwritten rule pageless. It has a page — every
rule in the collection builds one, and the grid links to it. What it
lacks is the guidance, and "unwritten" is the word the rest of the page
already uses.
Checked

read off the element. The tightest pair is 4.88:1. A first sweep of
