Ported from OpenINF/.github, where this landed as bccd6d2 and 966b995.

Three things here are defects rather than wording.

The container creation hang

post-create.sh left stdin open when it installed fisher. postCreateCommand hands the script a pipe that never delivers, fisher fetches in background jobs and then waits, and with no job control a child that reads that pipe stops and the wait never returns. It hung container creation for ten minutes at 0% CPU. Closed with </dev/null, the same install takes 0.7s. The curl is bounded as well (--connect-timeout 10 --max-time 120), so a stalled connection cannot imitate the same symptom.

The nvm.fish preinstall also stops being silenced by || true. It is genuinely non-fatal — it only duplicates, for fish, a version the container already has — but it has to say so, or a bare nvm use is broken there with nothing to explain why.

Pins that could move

fisher and nvm.fish were pinned by tag. This is remote code piped into a shell, and a tag is a name its owner can move, so they are pinned by commit now — written the way the workflows pin actions, immutable ref with the version as a trailing comment.

.renovaterc.json5 has to learn the new shape or it silently stops tracking them, so its matcher captures both halves. Both are verified below.

Commit signing across sessions

post-start.sh counted the forwarded agent's identities with ^ssh-, which does not match ECDSA or security keys, and only looked at all when the key file was absent — so a session that forwarded a different identity kept the old one. It now matches by key type, re-reads on every attach, and keeps rather than deletes a file it could not re-verify, since that file cannot mis-sign: the signature goes through the agent by fingerprint, so a stale file yields "no matching identity" rather than someone else's signature. mkdir -p -m 700 is split into mkdir and chmod because -m applies only to the deepest directory (SC2174).

What is deliberately left alone

  • devcontainer.json is already a strict superset of the upstream file once comments are set aside — the java and git-lfs features, forwardPorts, and the Shopify extension are all yours. Untouched.
  • The Dockerfile keeps its own prose (it documents the fish-apt-get alternative, which upstream's does not) and its own digest, which renovate manages. It gains only the hadolint ignore=DL3008 pragma beside the skipcq one, since the two tools each read only their own.

How it was checked

  • Both pinned SHAs resolved against the GitHub API: a04308b really is fisher 4.4.8, abd3002 really is nvm.fish 2.2.17.
  • The new renovate matcher was run against the new post-create.sh: two matches, with datasource, depName, currentDigest and currentValue all captured correctly.
  • bash -n and sh -n clean on both scripts; both keep mode 755.
  • verify.spelling needed nistp in project-terms.txt (from the ECDSA key-type pattern); added, and clean after.
  • No new failures across verify.all.

Ordering

Land after "check the runtime pins still agree" (#1888). post-create.sh here calls verify.runtimes rather than repeating the comparison, so that task needs to exist first.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Developer Experience

    • Improved development container setup with runtime validation and more reliable fish tooling installation.
    • Development tools are now pinned more consistently for reproducible environments.
    • Improved installation diagnostics, including clearer warnings when optional tooling setup cannot complete.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved forwarded SSH identity handling by filtering unsupported keys and excluding certificates from generated signing-key data.
  • Chores

    • Updated project terminology coverage and container linting configuration.

Ported from OpenINF/.github, where this landed as bccd6d2 and 966b995.

Depends on `verify.runtimes` being present, so it wants landing after
the branch that adds it. post-create.sh calls that task rather than
repeating the comparison: stated twice it would be two rules, and the
one nobody runs is the one that rots.

Three things here are defects rather than wording.

post-create.sh left stdin open when it installed fisher.
postCreateCommand hands the script a pipe that never delivers, fisher
fetches in background jobs and then `wait`s, and with no job control a
child that reads that pipe stops and the wait never returns. It hung
container creation for ten minutes at 0% CPU. Closed, the same install
takes 0.7s. The curl is bounded as well, so a stalled connection cannot
imitate the same symptom.

fisher and nvm.fish were pinned by tag. This is remote code piped into
a shell, and a tag is a name its owner can move, so they are pinned by
commit now -- written the way the workflows pin actions, immutable ref
with the version as a trailing comment. Both SHAs were checked against
the tags they claim. .renovaterc.json5 has to learn the new shape or it
silently stops tracking them, so its matcher captures both halves;
verified it still matches, and both pins still resolve.

post-start.sh counted the forwarded agent's identities with `^ssh-`,
which does not match ECDSA or security keys, and only looked at all
when the key file was absent -- so a session that forwarded a different
identity kept the old one. It now matches by key type, re-reads on
every attach, and keeps rather than deletes a file it could not
re-verify, since that file cannot mis-sign: the signature goes through
the agent by fingerprint. `mkdir -p -m 700` is split into mkdir and
chmod because -m applies only to the deepest directory (SC2174).

The Dockerfile keeps its own prose and its own digest, which renovate
manages; it gains only the hadolint pragma beside the skipcq one, since
the two tools each read only their own. devcontainer.json is already a
superset of the upstream file once comments are set aside, so it is
left alone.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The devcontainer now validates pinned runtime declarations, hardens fish tooling installation, filters forwarded SSH identities, updates Renovate parsing, and recognizes nistp as a project term.

Changes

Devcontainer runtime and SSH identity updates

Layer / File(s) Summary
Runtime validation and fish tooling
.devcontainer/Dockerfile, .devcontainer/post-create.sh, .renovaterc.json5
The devcontainer validates runtime declarations, pins Fisher and nvm.fish commits, bounds downloads, reports non-fatal installation failures, and updates Renovate capture groups.
Forwarded SSH identity refresh
.devcontainer/post-start.sh, project-terms.txt
The attach script filters supported non-certificate identities before counting and writing the signing key. Existing mismatch warnings remain, and the terms list adds nistp.

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to d9940

The devcontainer now selects only one supported SSH signing identity, including when certificates are offered, preventing invalid signing-key output. No current merge-blocking risk remains.

Comment thread .devcontainer/post-start.sh Outdated
Review catch on the ported post-start.sh: the count and the thing
written were not the same list.

`count` is how many of `ssh-add -L`'s lines look like a key type this
accepts. The file was then written from `identities`, which is every
line the agent offered. An agent forwarding a certificate alongside the
key it belongs to prints two lines and matches one -- the certificate
is `ssh-ed25519-cert-v01@openssh.com`, deliberately not an accepted
type -- so the guard would pass and write both.

Two keys in the file breaks both readers of it. `ssh-keygen -Y sign -f`
wants one public key, and allowed_signers gets its second field from
`awk '{print $1, $2}'` over the whole file, which becomes a second line
in a grammar that has room for none.

The matching lines are kept now and the count taken from those, so what
is counted is what is written.

Checked against a single key, a key plus its certificate, two real
keys, an ECDSA key, and "The agent has no identities.": one line
written in the first, second and fourth, and a refusal in the others.

Good catch — this one was real, and fixed in d994009.

The count and the thing written were not the same list. count is how many of ssh-add -L's lines match an accepted key type; the file was then written from identities, which is every line the agent offered. An agent forwarding a certificate alongside the key it belongs to prints two lines and matches one — the certificate is ssh-ed25519-cert-v01@openssh.com, deliberately not an accepted type — so the guard passed and wrote both.

Two keys in that file breaks both readers of it: ssh-keygen -Y sign -f wants one public key, and allowed_signers takes its second field from awk '{print $1, $2}' over the whole file, which becomes a second line in a grammar that has room for none.

The matching lines are kept now and the count taken from those, so what is counted is what is written.

Checked across five cases:

agent holds count lines written
one ed25519 1 1
ed25519 + its certificate 1 1 (was 2)
two real keys 2 refused
ECDSA nistp256 1 1
The agent has no identities. 0 refused

Worth noting this defect is also in OpenINF/.github, which is where the file was ported from and where it has already landed. Same fix wanted there, or the next port carries it straight back.
