Baron Schwartz is a database performance and scalability expert, known online as Xaprb. He is a co-author of *High Performance MySQL* (see the [3rd edition](/resources/books/high-performance-mysql-3rd/)) and the original author of [innotop](/resources/software/innotop/), the terminal monitor for MySQL. He also created Maatkit and Aspersa, the two toolkits that Percona forked in 2011 to become [Percona Toolkit](/resources/software/percona-toolkit/).

He joined Percona in 2008 and later founded VividCortex, a database performance monitoring company that SolarWinds acquired in 2019. He has spoken at conferences including USENIX LISA and SREcon, and has focused his career on learning and teaching about the performance and observability of systems in general, and of databases in particular.

Simon J Mudd is a senior SRE and database expert with more than 15 years of experience, based in Madrid. He is the author of [ps-top](/resources/software/ps-top/), a top-like terminal monitor for MySQL built on `performance_schema`, which he started as a project to learn Go. His other open source work includes grchecker, a monitor for MySQL Group Replication clusters, and a Go library for reading MySQL defaults files. He also presents at community events — for example, a talk at a Madrid MySQL meetup on how Booking.com uses MySQL.

It can watch many servers at once and aggregate across them, is fully customizable (it even has a plugin interface), and can also run non-interactively for pipe-and-filter use in scripts. The manual is embedded in the program itself and is available through `perldoc` and `man`. It's written in Perl, needs only a handful of common modules (DBI, DBD::mysql, Term::ReadKey, and Time::HiRes), and is packaged for Debian, Ubuntu, Gentoo, and FreeBSD.

The tool was originally written by Baron Schwartz in 2006 and remains actively maintained on GitHub — the 1.16.0 release (May 2026) reworked query `EXPLAIN` support and added `EXPLAIN ANALYZE`, following earlier releases that added MySQL 8.0 and 9.x compatibility, SSL, and Group Replication support. Its user-statistics mode also surfaces the table and index statistics added by Percona Server and MariaDB.

ps-top only needs `SELECT` on the `performance_schema` tables. The mutex and stage views need `setup_instruments` to be enabled; ps-top will switch them on itself if the account has the grants and restores the original settings on exit. For credentials it reads `~/.my.cnf` or an explicit defaults file, accepts host, port, socket, and user options on the command line, and can prompt for a password or take a Go DSN from the environment so nothing sensitive lands in a process listing.
