ADFA-6493 | Add Quick Build and LLM context APIs to the Plugin API - #2134
Conversation
Wrap two lines over ktlint's 140-column limit in IdeBuildServiceImpl so the file passes the Spotless ratchet before ADFA-6493 edits it.
No behaviour change. The toolbar tap's body (save open files, confirm replacing an installed app, hand the tap to the session) moves to QuickBuildAction.launchTap, which reports how the tap ended through an optional callback. ProjectHandlerActivity gains a suspend awaitQuickBuildClobberConfirmed that returns the user's answer; ensureQuickBuildClobberConfirmed now wraps it. Both let the plugin API start Quick Build through the same path as the button.

A cancelQuickBuild landing after the tap passed its gate but before the session showed BUILDING returned false, and the tap built anyway. A stop sent ahead of the tap would be reduced against Idle and dropped too. The tap now reports STARTED after handing itself to the session, and a stop for a plugin run goes through TapHandoff, which holds it until then. The session reduces events in the order sent, so the stop follows the tap.

NITPICK - 2 inline, not listed
Previous round
- CodeRabbit,
PluginQuickBuildCoordinator.kt:108(cancel before the tap reaches an Idle session is dropped): fixed at2068685.TapHandoffholds the stop untilonTapQueued(), which runs afteronQuickBuildTapped. The IMPORTANT at line 101 is the same race in a different session state (live session, beforeBuildStarted), which the handoff does not cover.
Leads checked and dropped: the tracker baseline taken before the save/dialog (attributing the save's own build to the tap is correct, and durationMillis is documented as starting at the call), and hardcoded English messages (other plugin-API refusals such as BUILD_IN_PROGRESS_REASON are English too; the duplication is kept as a nitpick).
Verdict basis: the repo has no written approve/request-changes rule (CLAUDE.md only gates the move to QA on "no critical, high, or medium findings"), so the default applied: confirmed IMPORTANT findings mean request changes. Findings were verified against SessionReducer.kt and QuickBuildStatus.kt at 2068685. No tests were run.

Requesting changes for the 3 IMPORTANT findings in the review above: the stop that cancelQuickBuild sends to a live session before the build starts, buildingFrom surviving Reconnecting, and a stopped rebaseline reported as Failed. Each needs a fix plus a test that fails without it. The MINOR findings and nitpicks do not block the merge.
Stop a live tap's build once it starts; report stopped rebaselines as cancelled and respawned builds as running. Share onError default via ErrorCallback, flash dropped toolbar taps, reuse refusal strings, drop unused clobber wrapper.

MINOR
- PluginQuickBuildCoordinator.kt:149 - the plugin-start slot has no ceiling, so a run that never settles blocks every later start
- PluginQuickBuildCoordinator.kt:244 - a held stop is re-sent only on
Building, so it is lost on the full-rebuild path (reply in the existing CodeRabbit thread)

TapHandoffholds the stop and re-sends it; testa stop between a live tap and its build stops the build. It is still exposed to the gap in the CodeRabbit thread. - itsaky-adfa IMPORTANT, stopped rebaseline reported as Failed: fixed. A park after a stop now reads

itsaky-adfa's CHANGES_REQUESTED is on 2068685. All three of their IMPORTANT findings are fixed at head.
What was checked
- Ran the new and touched unit tests at head:
:plugin-api187,:plugin-manager9 (IdeBuildServiceImplQuickBuildTest,PluginBuildServiceTest),:app36 (PluginQuickBuildCoordinatorTest,QuickBuildRunTrackerTest). All pass. CI here builds the APK and runs no unit tests. - AI-Core (addons #133) compiles against this branch's
plugin-api.jar, and its 1112 unit tests pass. - Checked the ADFA-6493 acceptance criteria one by one. "Defaults report not available so older hosts keep working" holds through AI-Core's class-presence gate, not through the defaults, since a host older than 26.42 has no such methods. The changelog says this.
- Dropped leads: the 5 s quiet window (33x the watcher's 150 ms coalescing), a stop during a clean tap's quiet window (it reads
Cancelled, which matches thecancelQuickBuildKDoc), andEDITOR_CLOSEDfor any failed tap (that exception escapeslifecycleScopeeither way). - Not verified on a device.
No written approve/request-changes rule beyond CLAUDE.md's QA gate, which needs no outstanding critical, high or medium findings. The verdict follows the default: MINOR findings only, so COMMENT.
- A held stop is re-sent on Provisioning as well as Building, so a stop reduced while a full rebuild is queued now cancels the rebuild instead of letting it land as Reloaded. - track() gives up after 30 minutes with Failed, so a session that stops moving cannot hold the plugin slot until the IDE restarts. - start() asks QuickBuildAction.isBlockedByStandardBuild() instead of repeating the toolbar's rule. - PROJECT_SYNCING and NO_APP_MODULE resolve the toolbar's string resources, so plugins get the same translated text. - The in-flight tap flash uses flashInfoLong, like msg_build_slot_busy. - The tracker's start KDoc now says what it is: the status when the plugin asked, before the save, so the save's own build is this tap's.

Approving: no CRITICAL or IMPORTANT findings. The two MINORs (the held stop on the rebuild path, and the missing ceiling on a plugin run) and the nitpicks are safe to address before merge or in a follow-up.

A stopped rebaseline can stay in Provisioning until the 30-minute ceiling, and onGaveUp reported Failed although cancelQuickBuild had already promised Cancelled. onGaveUp now honours the stop, as onQuiet does.

Not raised: the PROJECT_SYNCING refusal differs from the toolbar's wait-for-sync, but ADFA-6493 AC 1 asks for it explicitly.
A plugin tap made during the background warm compile settled UpToDate after the quiet window, while its build was still queued: the warm compile projects as the deployed generation, so the status never moved. The session now exposes whether a tap's ask is outstanding, and the quiet window keeps waiting on it while the status is live (UpToDate or Failed), where the ask is always answered or withdrawn. Also from review: - availability() picks the module by the provisioner's own rule. - cancel() returns false for a run that already ended. - track() turns a throw into Failed instead of crashing the IDE and holding the plugin slot. - cancelQuickBuild's contract says the future reports what happened. - status() checks availability without building the refusal message. - KDoc on QuickBuildProvider.

Description
This PR implements the requested Plugin API capabilities to allow the AI agent (and other plugins) to interact with Quick Build exactly as a user tapping the toolbar button would.
getQuickBuildAvailability(),startQuickBuild(),cancelQuickBuild(), andgetQuickBuildStatus()withinIdeBuildService.QuickBuildActioninto a sharedlaunchTapmechanism so the plugin API bypasses redundant prompts and avoids state drift.QuickBuildRunTrackerto translate the continuous session status stream into a one-time structuredQuickBuildResult(e.g.,Reloaded,UpToDate,Failed,Refused,Declined,Cancelled) for the plugin calling the API.LlmInferenceServicewithContextWindowReportingBackendto report token limits and added structuredFailureKindreporting (OTHER,CONTEXT_TOO_LONG). The kindedonError(error, kind)default lives on a sharedErrorCallback, so one class can implement bothStreamCallbackandToolStreamCallback.ADFA-6493.and.ADFA-6300.mp4
Details
The
startQuickBuildcall returns a structured result once the operation either builds, fails, or is refused/cancelled.Plugins using these methods must floor
plugin.min_ide_versionat26.42. An older IDE has none of the new methods or classes, so a call fails withNoSuchMethodError/NoClassDefFoundErrorrather than falling back to a default (seedocs/PLUGIN_API_CHANGELOG.md).Observation
Unit tests have been added for the Quick Build run tracker, plugin coordinator, and LLM response failure kinds.
