Summary

  • Replace the oldrl-scanner.ymlreusable workflow and local .github/actions/rl-scanner/ composite action with an inline rl-scanner job in publish.yml using auth0/devsecops-tooling/.github/actions/rl-scan@main

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Chores
    • Release builds now run the security scan directly within the release workflow. The scan continues to run for manual releases and qualifying merged release branches.

Review details

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in .github/actions/rl-scanner/action.yml: The composite Reversing Labs scanner action was removed, including its required artifact-path and version inputs, Python and dependency setup, AWS credential configuration, scanner invocation and failure handling, and scan-status output.
  • observed — Modified behavior in .github/workflows/rl-secure.yml: The reusable RL-Secure workflow was removed, including its required inputs and secrets, release/dispatch job condition, build and archive steps, scanner invocation, and scan-status output.
  • observed — Modified behavior in .github/workflows/release.yml: Replaces the reusable rl-secure.yml workflow call and its inputs and secrets with an inline scanner job. The job is gated to manual dispatches or merged pull requests whose head branch starts with release/; it checks out full history, builds with Node 22, archives the package, retrieves its version, and passes the artifact and scanner/security-tool credentials to the RL scanner action.

Keep the release job reachable for merged release pull requests.

A merged release/ pull request triggers closed, but rl-scanner is skipped because its condition only allows manual dispatches and opened chore/rl-scanner-update pull requests. Because release needs rl-scanner, GitHub skips release unless its condition allows a skipped dependency. This blocks releases from merged release/ pull requests.

Allow the release job to continue when the scanner is skipped, but not when it fails or the workflow is cancelled:

Run release scanning on a trusted post-merge event.

The current pull_request.closed condition admits merged release/* PRs from forks. Fork-triggered workflows do not receive repository Actions secrets, so rl-scan can receive empty credentials and fail during AWS setup or private package installation. Because release has needs: rl-scanner, that failure prevents publication.

Adding a fork-head restriction alone is insufficient. It would skip rl-scanner, and release would also be skipped because its required job was skipped. Move this release path to a trusted post-merge trigger, or otherwise ensure that a deliberately skipped scanner does not block release.
