Maintainer Wanted

I need to start thinking about a transition plan for the maintainer of this gem. Ideally, someone joins with me for a year or two, so we can work together and share knowledge.

This is an exciting opportunity. Working on this gem has taught this back-end programmer a tonne about Bootstrap, Rails forms, and CSS/HTML. And if you're already good at one or more of those, the opportunity is to make this gem much better, and bring it into the future.

And it would be great if more than one person was interested. Another challenge this gem has always had is that from almost the start it's been mostly maintained by a single person, and I think it would be better if there were other people involved so one can exchange ideas, etc.

Hi Larry — I’m interested in helping with the maintainer transition.
I’m the founder of Karaaslan Labs and I’ve been building a public OSS contribution track around developer tooling, reliability, issue triage, and PR correctness review. I’m not coming in as a long-time Rails/bootstrap_form maintainer, so I’d prefer to earn trust in a scoped way rather than ask for broad access immediately.
A practical place I can start is helping with the current review/triage backlog. For example, I checked #796 against current main: the change adds tabindex="-1" to alert_message, while the existing alert_message output tests in test/bootstrap_form_test.rb still describe the old markup, so that looks like a focused place to tighten regression coverage before merge.
I can help with issue triage, current-main verification, focused PR review, CI/test maintenance, documentation, and gradually take on code/release work as I learn the project. I use AI heavily in my development workflow, but I review source behavior, scope, tests, and validation evidence before posting public work.
If that contribution style fits what you want from the transition, I’m happy to start with review/triage and a maintainer-selected small task.

@karaaslanz Ömer, pleased to meet you. The approach you're suggesting sounds reasonable. This is a small gem, and historically most PRs have been submitted by the maintainer at the time, so eventually that would be part of what you'd be doing. I think your front-end experience would be useful. It's one of the challenges I've always had: I started using bootstrap_form because I wasn't a front-end dev, and ended up maintaining it 😄 .

However, the gem also tightly integrates with Rails, so expect to develop some Ruby and Rails that I'm not sure you'll get from AI.

Finally, notice I updated the call-out for maintainers to suggest multiple. That's not prompted by your offer. 😄 Another challenge this gem has always had is that from the start it's been mostly maintained by a single person, and I think it would be better if there were other people involved so one can exchange ideas.

Thanks Larry — that makes sense, and I appreciate the warning on the Rails side.
I won’t treat AI as a substitute for understanding the framework behavior. Where a change depends on Rails semantics, I’ll verify it against the current source/tests and the relevant Rails behavior before proposing code, and I’ll keep the scope small enough that I can explain and maintain it myself.
I’ve already left the focused review on #796. While that settles, my next step will be a current-main reproduction/triage pass on a small unowned issue so I can come back with exact Rails/Ruby versions, expected vs actual behavior, and a regression-test seam before touching implementation.
If there’s a particular issue you think would be the best first one to learn the gem’s Rails integration, I’m happy to start there; otherwise I’ll pick a small unowned bug and keep it tight.
