EPC QR Code

EPC QR Code is a variant of the QR Code barcode symbology carrying the details of a SEPA credit transfer, so that a payer can initiate the payment by scanning it, for example from an invoice. It is also known as the GiroCode.

Uses:

  • Payments in euro across the Single Euro Payments Area.

Standards: EPC069-12 Quick Response Code - Guidelines to Enable the Data Capture for the Initiation of a SEPA Credit Transfer, ISO/IEC 18004, ITS - QR Code.

Data and Options

  • The data field input is the payload described in the EPC guidelines: up to 12 elements separated by line feeds (or carriage return and line feed), in this order, with nothing after the last element given:
    • Service Tag, BCD.
    • Version, 001 or 002.
    • Character set of the elements that follow: 1 UTF-8, 2 ISO 8859-1, 3 ISO 8859-2, 4 ISO 8859-4, 5 ISO 8859-5, 6 ISO 8859-7, 7 ISO 8859-10, 8 ISO 8859-15.
    • Identification, SCT.
    • The BIC of the beneficiary's bank, of 8 or 11 characters, which may be empty in version 002.
    • The name of the beneficiary, up to 70 characters.
    • The IBAN of the beneficiary's account.
    • Optionally the amount: EUR followed by an amount from 0.01 to 999999999.99.
    • Optionally the purpose: a code of up to 4 characters.
    • Optionally either a structured creditor reference of up to 35 characters, such as an ISO 11649 RF reference, or remittance text of up to 140 characters, but not both.
    • Optionally information for the payer, up to 70 characters.
  • The encoder validates the elements, including the check digits of the IBAN and of an RF creditor reference. The whole payload must not exceed 331 bytes.
  • When the parse option is specified, any instances of ^NNN in the data field are replaced with their equivalent ASCII value, useful for specifying the line feeds as ^010 and other characters.
  • The symbol is created at error correction level M, which the EPC guidelines require.
