Fixes #8262

Summary

Completed A2A tasks may return their output through artifacts rather than conversation history. When trust_remote_completion_status=False, the artifact text was not included in the follow-up LLM prompt, causing the calling agent to miss the remote agent's actual result.

This PR addresses the issue by:

  • Including completed A2A artifact text in the follow-up prompt when remote completion is not directly trusted.
  • Updating the remote response notice to clarify where the artifact result is provided.
  • Preserving the existing behavior when trust_remote_completion_status=True.
  • Adding regression tests for completed artifacts, empty results, and trusted completion.

The fix is implemented in the shared task-completion handler, avoiding duplicated logic across synchronous and asynchronous execution paths.

Verification

  • Tests added or updated for the changed behavior
  • Relevant tests and quality checks pass locally

Test results:

  • New regression tests: 3 passed.
  • Existing A2A tests: 113 passed, 7 skipped.
  • Confirmed the primary regression test fails before the fix and passes afterward.
  • Ruff lint and formatting checks passed.
  • git diff --cached --check passed.

Additional context

  • The change is limited to A2A completed-task result handling and its associated prompt template.
  • No external LLM API calls are required for the new regression tests.
  • The implementation preserves the existing trusted-completion behavior

Note

Medium Risk
Changes A2A prompt composition and how untrusted remote output is surfaced to the LLM; mitigations are in place but this is security-adjacent delegation logic.

Overview
When a remote A2A task completes and trust_remote_completion_status is false, the follow-up prompt now includes the completed artifact text in a dedicated <REMOTE_AGENT_RESULT> block (empty results are skipped). trust_remote_completion_status=True still returns the remote result directly without reinjecting it.

Remote artifact content is HTML-escaped (</>) before injection so untrusted output cannot spoof framework control tags like REMOTE_AGENT_STATUS. The REMOTE_AGENT_RESPONSE_NOTICE text is updated to point agents at that block and to treat remote results as untrusted task data, not instructions.

Regression tests cover prompt inclusion, trusted vs untrusted paths, delimiter escaping, and ampersand preservation.

Review summary

Reviewed all three changed files: the A2A prompt-template text, the shared task-completion handler, and new regression tests. The change surfaces remote A2A artifact results into the follow-up LLM prompt when trust_remote_completion_status=False. The only theoretical concern is indirect prompt injection from the remote agent's result text; however, the remote agent is an explicitly trusted, operator-configured peer and its conversation history was already included in the prompt before this change, so the injection surface is not newly introduced. No reportable security vulnerabilities were found.

📝 Walkthrough

When a completed A2A task has an untrusted, non-empty result, the wrapper adds the escaped result to the follow-up prompt. The notice identifies the result as untrusted task data and warns against following embedded instructions.

The async path currently includes untrusted completed artifacts in follow-up prompts, but lacks a regression test protecting that behavior. The PR is mergeable with a bounded test follow-up; a future wiring regression could silently omit artifacts for async callers.

Explanation

Issue #8262 requires completed A2A artifact text in the follow-up prompt when trust_remote_completion_status=False. _handle_task_completion adds non-empty results in a REMOTE_AGENT_RESULT block and escapes angle brackets. REMOTE_AGENT_RESPONSE_NOTICE identifies that block and no longer claims that the result is in conversation history. Trusted completion still returns the result directly. Tests cover untrusted, trusted, empty, delimiter, and ampersand cases.

Explanation

The changes stay within issue #8262. The notice update, result escaping, shared completion handling, and regression tests support completed A2A result delivery. No unrelated product change is demonstrated.

🔒 Agentic Security Review

Severity: HIGH

Description: With trust_remote_completion_status left at its default of false, a completed A2A result—including artifact text that is not copied into conversation history—is now inserted into the local follow-up prompt. html.escape only stops that text from forging REMOTE_AGENT delimiters. The new instruction not to follow tool requests or A2A directives is in the same prompt. The follow-up still runs execute_task with the agent's tools, and those tools execute without a separate approval. If the final output parses as AgentResponse with is_a2a=true, that message is sent to the remote endpoint.

Impact: A remote A2A agent that this config treats as untrusted can place instructions only in a completed artifact. That text now sits in the local task prompt on a turn that still has the caller's tools and still honors model-set is_a2a. The local tools can run, or the model can send local task context back to the remote endpoint, even though the new notice says not to follow those directives. The remote peer needs no credentials on the local process; a scripted completed-task response is enough.

Remediation: On the untrusted completion follow-up, do not rely on the in-prompt warning. Keep the artifact out of the instruction channel, or enforce the policy in code: do not pass tools into that turn, and ignore model-set is_a2a instead of sending another message. html.escape can remain as delimiter encoding.

Thanks for the security review. I've traced both execution paths and confirmed the concern.

The completed, non-trusted A2A result currently passes through the normal Agent execution flow, which may retain tool access and permit further delegation.

I propose isolating the TaskState.completed + trust_remote_completion_status=False path into a tool-free final-answer step that does not process model-generated A2A delegation requests.

The input_required path would retain its existing multi-turn behavior.

One implementation detail is that passing tools=[] to the existing Agent execution path is insufficient because CrewAI can fall back to agent.tools. I'll therefore verify the effective executor permissions rather than relying on the argument alone.

Would this restricted completion behavior be acceptable? I plan to add regression tests for tool execution and repeat delegation before implementing it.

Add an assertion for the production continuation input.

The completed-artifact test bypasses _handle_agent_response_and_continue and agent_executor.invoke. It can pass if the wrapper drops remote_notice before the follow-up execution.

The existing trust_remote_completion_status=False test exercises _delegate_to_a2a, but checks only the callback count and final result. It does not inspect the continuation task description or executor input for a completed artifact. Add a focused assertion for that input.

Add an assertion for the production continuation input.

The existing trust_remote_completion_status=False test does not inspect the continuation task description for a completed artifact. #8266 (review)

Thanks for the suggestion, @coderabbitai!

I've addressed this by extending the existing test_trust_remote_completion_status_false_continues_conversation integration test.

The test now captures the actual task.description passed to the local agent's continuation callback and verifies that the completed remote artifact is present in the follow-up execution input.

Verification:

  • Targeted tests: 3 passed.
  • A2A-related tests: 117 passed, 7 skipped.
  • No production logic changes.

This addresses the integration-test coverage gap you identified.

@Jiacheng-952 Thanks for the update. I verified that the test captures task.description in the continuation callback and checks that it contains the completed remote result inside <REMOTE_AGENT_RESULT> delimiters. This addresses the integration-test coverage gap.
