Digital Library: protected files, custom roles and granular permissions - #481

Conversation
…f the web root Each Digital Library attachment now has a visibility: everyone, signed-in readers, admin and staff only, or the reader who has the book on loan, with a library-wide default for the ones left on "Default". DigitalAccess holds the decision in core, so the book page, the file route, the public API, OAI-PMH and the Mobile API answer the same way; anything that fails while deciding closes the file. Files move to storage/digital/, outside the web root. Their URL stays /uploads/digital/<name>, and ProtectedUploadController serves them after the check, with HEAD, ETag/304 and If-Range besides Range, the session released before streaming, and an optional X-Sendfile handoff. The app opens them with signed links that expire after a day and name one file and one active reader. DigitalStorage moves the files uploaded before this out of public/uploads/digital/: rename on the same disk, otherwise a copy checked by size and SHA-256 before the original goes, never overwriting a different file, one run at a time, small budgets during page requests and the rest on the maintenance cron or "Sposta ora". The old folder answers 403 to direct requests meanwhile, and a file put back there later (an old backup restored) is moved again. storage/digital is created with the writable-folder mode by the installer, the updater, the setup script and the plugin, and is included in backups. The README no longer claims download statistics, and its access-control line now describes what exists. Refs #480.
The deny-all .htaccess the previous commit wrote into public/uploads/digital/ refused every Digital Library download on Apache and LiteSpeed: a folder's .htaccess applies to every URL that maps into it before public/.htaccess rewrites the request to Pinakes. That folder needs no rule of its own, because public/.htaccess already sends every /uploads/digital/ request to Pinakes whether or not the file is there; the rule is removed (only when it is exactly the one written by a pre-release build) and a unit test now pins the routing rule that does the protecting. The generic upload branch could serve a Digital Library file without asking DigitalAccess when the path was spelled /uploads/./digital/<name>: "digital" was still one of its allowed roots. It is no longer, a file that resolves into either Digital Library folder is refused there, and empty or dot segments are rejected, as the docblock already said. storage/digital is chmod'ed to 0775 after mkdir(), as the installer and the updater do, so a 022 umask no longer leaves it 0755; uploaded files are chmod'ed to 0644. ensureSchema() is public and reports the failed tables like the other schema-owning plugins, so the schema guard can run it, and onActivate() refuses to finish with a missing table. An end-to-end spec walks the whole feature as people use it: the admin uploads five PDFs and picks who may open each, an anonymous visitor, a signed-in reader and the reader with the loan each see and open what they should, "Accedi per aprirlo" brings the reader back, the library default and the locked-card switch take effect, and a file left in the old folder is moved out intact on the next visit. Refs #480.
…al its group bits On a case-insensitive disk /uploads/Digital/<name> is the same file as /uploads/digital/<name>, but the rule that sends the private uploads to Pinakes was case-sensitive, so that spelling fell through to the rule that serves public uploads and Apache handed out a file from public/uploads/digital/ without asking DigitalAccess. The rule now has [NC]; the controller already refuses that spelling once it gets there. An upgrade run by an older updater creates storage/digital by copying its .gitkeep from the package, with mkdir()'s 0755. ensureDir() now adds the group bits the other writable folders have (ug+rwX, as setup-permissions.sh does) to an existing folder that lacks them, and never the "other" bits. Refs #480.
The unit test now covers what the access check is for beyond the file route: the public API gives out only the files anyone may open (library default included) and passes links to other sites as they are; OAI-PMH offers an open file in MAG and leaves a staff-only one out, and no other format (oai_dc, marcxml, mods) carries a Digital Library address; the Mobile API lists closed files without their address and with the reason, signs the links for the reader and the file, gives the loan edition to the reader with the loan and the staff file to staff, and drops closed entries when they are switched off; private mode lets a signed link reach the checked route and nothing else, and a forged one is still refused there. The end-to-end spec adds the two ways the old files are moved besides page visits: "Sposta ora" on a library with 2,500 files left in the old folder, and the maintenance hook the daily cron runs, moving 600 at once past the page-visit limit. Refs #480.
… and fix sendfile A file in public/uploads/digital that cannot be moved (an old folder the web server cannot write to, or a different file with the same name in storage/digital) was retried on every request, hashing both copies each time: one 40 MB audiobook added about 450 ms to every page, for good. A failure is now remembered by name, size and mtime; page requests skip it while it is unchanged and mark the move done, and the daily maintenance, the plugin activation and "Sposta ora" try it again. Comparing an identical leftover reads both files, so on a page request it now counts against the copy budget too. The settings page says how many files cannot be moved. Activating (or installing) the plugin now runs the move with a 20 second budget: a plugin that was switched off during the upgrade never ran it on page requests, so its files were still in the old folder when it came back on. DIGITAL_LIBRARY_SENDFILE hands a file to the web server only when it is already in storage/digital, the one folder the documented nginx alias and XSendFilePath expose; a file still in the old folder streams through PHP instead of a 404. The litespeed mode is gone: X-LiteSpeed-Location takes a URI under the document root, never a file path outside it. The file index stores verified_at as a Unix time and compares it with UNIX_TIMESTAMP(MAX(updated_at)), so a request whose connection RememberMeService switched to UTC no longer reads a verification as newer than a later change. A development table of the earlier DATETIME shape is rebuilt, being only a cache. Refs #480.
The test removed its temporary tree with exec('rm -rf ...'). The path was escaped and random, but a test has no reason to reach for a shell: a PHP walk does it, and opens first the folder the unmovable-file case makes read-only, so an interrupted run leaves nothing behind either.
Refs #480.

Important
The new file-name allowlist on the /uploads/digital/ route returns 404 for legacy files whose names have a space, an accented letter or a subfolder. Those links work today, and DigitalAttachments::repairLegacyUrl() was written to keep them working.
Reviewed changes
Initial review of the full PR: per-file access control for Digital Library attachments, the move of their files out of the web root, and signed links for the Mobile API.
DigitalAccessin core: works out each attachment's visibility (inherit/public/users/staff/loan), matches a file to the live records that list it (thedigital_library_filesindex is only a cache), and signs links with HMAC.ProtectedUploadController: thedigital/branch looks instorage/digitaland then the old folder, and asksDigitalAccessbefore serving. It also adds HEAD, ETag/304, If-Range, releases the session lock, and can hand the transfer to the web server with sendfile.DigitalStoragemigration: moves files with rename, or copy+hash+swap across disks. It keeps a registry of failed files and a marker stamped with the folder's mtime, and runs on page boot, on activation, from the maintenance hook and from "Sposta ora".- Every other way out: the public API and OAI-PMH MAG go through
anonymousUrl(). The Mobile APIbookDetailnow listsvisibility/accessand signs the links the reader may open. Private mode letspk_sigrequests through to the controller. - Plugin UI: a settings page, a visibility select on each attachment row, locked cards on the book page, and catalogue badges that skip staff-only files.
I checked these and found no problem: the active-loan query (attivo = 1 and stato IN ('in_corso','in_ritardo') is the idiom used elsewhere), the INSERT IGNORE of the signing secret (system_settings has UNIQUE(category, setting_key)), session availability on /uploads/digital/ (it is not in SessionPolicy's sessionless list), and the mobile staff upload path (StaffDigitalController delegates to handleUploadRequest, so it also writes to storage/digital). tests/digital-attachments-445.unit.php passes, ci-check-locales.py passes, and the DB-free part A of tests/digital-access-480.unit.php passes. Its DB parts were skipped here.

…s, and fix CI on PHP 8.2 and MariaDB File names from older versions (a space, an accented letter, a subfolder of the old folder) answered 404 after the upgrade: the route and the record matching accepted only [A-Za-z0-9._-]. One rule now serves both, DigitalAccess::isValidName(): any valid UTF-8 path whose segments are not empty and do not start with a dot, no backslash, no control character; realpath containment still keeps a request inside the folder. The record scan turns every character outside plain ASCII into a wildcard, so a name stored as %20 or with a raw or encoded accent is still found, and the exact match is made on the decoded name. A URL counts as a local file only when it is relative or on this installation's host. A link to another site whose path happened to contain /uploads/digital/ used to get a signature in the Mobile API, valid for that file name here; it no longer does. The public API now leaves out an off-site link whose attachment is closed to anonymous readers, instead of passing it on. Signed links expire on the hour (between 24 and 25 hours), so the same link is given for an hour: the book detail answers 304 again and the app's media cache keeps its entries. Mobile API: ebook_format describes the same edition as ebook_url; has_audio and has_ebook count editions closed to the reader even when the settings hide closed entries, and never a staff-only file; the url of an attachment is typed ['string', 'null'] for OpenAPI 3.1. A cross-disk copy whose original cannot be removed is a remembered failure, not a move. The update space preflight counts storage/digital, which the pre-update backup archives. The plugin README asks for storage/digital to be writable. CI: on PHP 8.2 chmod() leaves the stat cache stale within a request, so ensureDir() read the old mode and did not add the group bits (reproduced on PHP 8.2.34; 8.4 is not affected); it now clears the cache first. MariaDB accepts time zone offsets up to +13:00, so the index test uses +09:00. The unwritable-folder checks are skipped when the test runs as root, and the end-to-end test checks that the browser itself reaches the file after signing in. Refs #480.
On CI public/uploads/digital is not in the checkout, so the spec created it as the runner user with mode 0755 while Apache runs as www-data: the move out of it failed (safely, the file stayed served and checked) and "moved out of it on the next visit" went red. An installation has that folder from the web server, which can write to it; the spec now creates it with the shared mode the workflow gives the rest of public/uploads, and the unmovable-file test puts back the mode it found instead of 0755. "Sposta ora" counted on the requests made between seeding 2500 files and reading the settings page: the dashboard's background requests could move them all first. The files now appear while the admin is on the settings page, so one reload sits in between. Refs #480.

✅ No new issues found. Both earlier findings are fixed, and I resolved their threads.
Reviewed changes
This run covered the two commits pushed since the last Pullfrog review (c12f5cd, b79ab0d).
- Shared name rule for legacy files: added
DigitalAccess::isValidName(). The route andfileNameOf()both use it, so names with spaces, accented letters or a subfolder are served again behind the check. The record scan now turns characters outside plain ASCII intoLIKEwildcards, andlists()keeps only the records that really name the file. - Off-site links are never local:
fileNameOf()now returnsnullwhen a URL's host is not the installation's own. An external link can no longer get a signature.anonymousUrl()takes an optional$bookId, and the public API uses it so an off-site link follows its attachment's visibility. - Stable signed links:
signedUrl()now rounds the expiry up to the hour. A link lives 24 to 25 hours and stays the same for the whole hour, so the MobilebookDetailETag answers 304 again. - Mobile
bookDetailfields:has_audio/has_ebooknow count editions closed to the reader even when locked entries are hidden, and never count staff-only files.ebook_urlandebook_formatnow come from the same edition. The OpenAPIurltype is now['string', 'null']. - Migration and updater: a cross-disk copy whose original cannot be removed now counts as a remembered failure, not a move.
fileperms()reads a fresh mode afterclearstatcache(). The update space check now countsstorage/digital. - Tests and CI: the unwritable-folder checks are skipped when running as root. The
+14:00time zone check now uses+09:00for MariaDB. The e2e spec creates the old folder with a shared mode and checks that the browser actually reaches the file after login. New unit checks cover legacy names, off-site links, the hourly expiry and the mobile fields.
I ran tests/digital-attachments-445.unit.php (72 checks pass) and the DB-free part A of tests/digital-access-480.unit.php (passes, including the new cross-disk check). php -l is clean on every changed PHP file. The DB-backed parts were skipped here.

… fail-closed files Roles and accounts - Keep the advanced tab, mail transport and templates, cache flush and API keys administrator-only: a custom role with settings.manage could otherwise store JavaScript on public pages or redirect password resets. The cookie banner and registration fields stay delegable. - Only administrators delete accounts, so only they remove administrators; Staff reads every reader's record again. - Map the routes the preset roles need (borrower picker, genres, series, works, archives) and move the mobile circulation views that name borrowers to the loan desk. AuthMiddleware now judges the real HTTP method. - A damaged role row grants nothing instead of taking the role pages down. The users list shows the status again, the public header names the custom role, and the notification bell is shown only to those who can open it. Digital Library files - Open-ended Range requests (every seek forward in an audiobook) sent the first bytes of the file: Slim rewinds the body before emitting it. Serve them from an offset stream. - A default visibility that cannot be read now closes files instead of opening them; OAI-PMH passes the record so off-site restricted links stay out; legacy "uploads/..." values are matched. - An expired or revoked app link is judged as the signed-in browser or as anonymous; administrators can revoke all app links; unknown file types are always downloads; invalid ranges are ignored. - The migration lock and state files work across users (cron vs web server), subfolders of the old folder move too, and the file index is no longer rebuilt by every loan in the catalogue. - Upgraded installs get the [NC] private-uploads rule in public/.htaccess; storage/digital is kept out of release archives and preserved by the manual upgrade. Plugins that call the new core classes now require 0.8.6-rc.1. main.css rebuilt.
…hat the 0.8.6 upgrade leaves accounts alone - digital-access-matrix-480.unit.php: every account (anonymous, readers, a borrower in each loan state, the individual grant, each custom role, Staff, admin, a suspended reader) against every visibility and every library default, through the real file route: PDF inline and as a download, audio seek with closed, suffix and open-ended ranges, HEAD, JSON clients, signed app links (expired, revoked, for another file). Also the book page answer, revocation inside an open session, unlisted files, the old public folder, and the review hardening. - digital-access-roles-480.spec.js: the same as people do it on Apache. The admin creates a role and grants access from the admin pages; each account signs in, downloads the PDFs and plays and seeks the audiobooks it may open, and is refused shared links to the others; taking the grant or the role back stops the next request of an open session. - role-boundaries-480.unit.php: admin-only settings, account deletion and administrator promotion, reader records, the route map of the preset roles, BackendPermissionsMiddleware and AuthMiddleware with the real HTTP method, damaged role rows. - migration-0.8.6-accounts.unit.php: the real migration on the real pre-0.8.6 utenti table with one account of every type and state; every column of every account is identical after one and two runs, and nobody gets a role or the digital grant. Checked on MySQL 9.6 and MariaDB 12.3. - The maintenance spec counts both folders together, as a page request in flight may already have moved some files; the settings tests follow the admin-only boundaries; custom-roles-480 uses the configured socket.

Reviewed changes
This run covered the two commits pushed since the last Pullfrog review at 6c5dbfa: 9cae5b0 (review fixes) and 81fc0ca (tests).
- Narrower settings delegation: put administrator-only checks back on secrets, mail transport and templates, the advanced tab, cache flushes and API keys.
mayConfigure()now covers only the cookie banner and deleting custom field definitions. - User management: Staff can open every reader's
details()page again.delete()is administrator-only, and the users list hides the delete button from everyone else. The status column renders the account status again. - Path map: mapped more mobile and backend catalogue prefixes. Mobile queue, availability, copy-lookup and circulation endpoints now need
loans.manage, and mobile digital upload needsdigital.manage.AuthMiddlewarenow passes the HTTP method toallowsPath(). - Closed when unsure: a default visibility that is unknown or cannot be read now closes files to
staff, and a failed loan lookup closes the file. The public API drops a record URL that the attachment list rejected. OAI-PMH now passes the record id toanonymousUrl(). - File serving: files with an unknown extension are now always sent as an
application/octet-streamdownload. InvalidRangeheaders are now ignored. Open-ended ranges go through the newOffsetFileStream, because Slim's emitter rewinds the body. A deadpk_siglink is now judged as the signed-in viewer, or as an anonymous visitor. - Index freshness:
indexOutdated()now only rescans when a record changed since verification mentions the file. Before, any loan touchinglibri.updated_attriggered a rescan.digital_library_files.file_namenow usesutf8mb4_bin. - Storage and upgrade: migration now moves files in subfolders too, and writes its state files by atomic rename. A lock file owned by another user can now be opened read-only.
PrivateUploadsRewriteHealadds[NC]to the exact old shipped rewrite line on upgrade. Release packaging now excludesstorage/digitalcontent. - Signed-link revocation: added
rotateSigningSecret()and a "Revoca tutti i link dell'app" button on the plugin settings page.
I checked three things against the code. OffsetFileStream works with vendor/slim/psr7's Stream and the emitter's rewind/Content-Length read. PrivateUploadsRewriteHeal::apply() rewrites both lines of main's public/.htaccess; I ran it with PHP. libri.updated_at is an indexed TIMESTAMP, so updated_at >= FROM_UNIXTIME(?) compares both sides in the session time zone. php -l is clean on the changed PHP files. The new DB-backed and browser suites were not run here.

…ary files only within one device - The users CSV and PDF exports list every account, operators included. A custom role with users.manage may not read those records one by one, so it cannot export them either; the export buttons are shown only to administrators and Staff. - PHP's rename() does not fail across devices: it copies straight onto the destination and ignores whether the original could be removed. The move now renames only when the old and new folders share a device, so the copy budget, the verified partial copy and the check on the original apply between two disks or Docker volumes.

Equal st_dev does not mean rename() stays atomic. Two bind mounts of one filesystem share st_dev, and so do two Docker named volumes, which is the case the comment below names. rename(2) across separate mount points still fails with EXDEV, and PHP then falls back silently to its own unverified copy and ignores the unlink result. So that deployment still bypasses the budget and the verified .partial swap.
Technical details
# sameDevice() misses same-filesystem mount points
## Affected sites
- app/Support/DigitalStorage.php:313 — `sameDevice()` compares only `stat()['dev']`
- app/Support/DigitalStorage.php:404 — `rename()` is attempted whenever `sameDevice()` is true
## Required outcome
- The fast path must never reach PHP's internal EXDEV copy fallback (`php_plain_files_rename`). Across mount points of one filesystem it should fail cleanly and fall through to the budgeted, verified copy.
## Suggested approach
- Replace the rename with `@link($from, $to)`. PHP's `link()` is a direct syscall with no EXDEV fallback, it fails across mount points, and it never overwrites `$to`. When it succeeds, `@unlink($from)`. If that unlink fails, return `'failed'` with the existing "original cannot be removed" log. The identical-content branch above already completes the move on the next run. Filesystems without hard links also fall through to the copy path.
- `sameDevice()` and its test could then go.|

What this changes
Completes #480 with protected Digital Library files and custom roles with independently assignable permissions. Administrators keep full access. Reader membership (Standard or Premium), backend access and permission to open restricted digital files are separate choices.
Roles and permission matrix
Administration → Roles and permissions provides an editable matrix. Only administrators can create, rename or delete unused roles, assign roles to accounts, or grant individual digital access. Role and permission changes are revalidated on subsequent requests, including existing sessions, bearer-token API requests and signed file links. Unmapped plugin and system-administration routes remain restricted to built-in operators.
The three presets are created on fresh installation and upgrade:
These are starting profiles, not fixed roles: administrators can change their permissions or add further roles such as Conductor. The matrix always shows the effective permissions. Names, descriptions, permission labels, controls and feedback are translated in Italian, English, German, French and Danish. Unchanged translated preset labels preserve their stored identity; deliberate custom names are kept as entered.
Assign a role from Users → Edit on a Standard or Premium account. Administrator and Staff accounts retain their existing privileges. User managers can maintain ordinary reader accounts, but cannot delete or export accounts, change operator accounts or grant privileges. Only administrators create, delete, promote or demote administrators. Settings delegation covers the ordinary settings tabs; the advanced tab (custom JavaScript and CSS, caches), mail transport and templates, and API keys stay administrator-only, because each of them could be turned into control of an administrator account. Managing attachments also requires Cataloging to edit files on a book record.
Files without backend access. A role may have only “Open restricted attachments”, or an administrator may enable the individual “Allow opening restricted digital attachments” checkbox on a reader's record. Either permits opening registered-user, staff-only and loan-only attachments on live book records, without allowing backend access, uploads or file edits. Revoking the role or individual grant stops the next download even for a reader already signed in. Unlisted files (uploaded but not yet saved on a record) open only for built-in operators and for a role that both manages attachments and opens restricted ones. An administrator can revoke every signed app link at once from the Digital Library settings.
The Mobile API advertises

Migration verifies cross-disk copies, preserves conflicts and reports remembered failures. The additive 0.8.6 migration creates
ruoli, addsutenti.ruolo_idandutenti.accesso_digitale, and seeds the three presets. Fresh-install schema matches the migration. Existing memberships are preserved and no user receives a new role or digital grant automatically. Assigned roles cannot be deleted until their users are reassigned.Plugin versions: Digital Library 1.5.0, Mobile API 1.8.0, OAI-PMH Server 1.1.2.
Fixes from the review
Rangerequests (every seek forward in an audiobook) returned the first bytes of the file under the requestedContent-Range, because Slim rewinds the body before emitting it. This also affects the released file route; seeking now streams from the requested offset.uploads/...values are matched.rename()copied unverified onto the final name, so the move now uses the budgeted, SHA-256-verified copy there.AuthMiddlewarejudges the real HTTP method.[NC]private-uploads rule inpublic/.htaccess;storage/digitalis kept out of release archives and preserved by the manual upgrade; plugins that call the new core classes require0.8.6-rc.1.Validation
utentitable, with one account of every type and state, leaves every column identical after one and two runs, on MySQL 9.6 and MariaDB 12.3. The real upgrade regression (0.8.5 installed from GitHub, then upgraded through the admin UI) seeds 12 accounts on 0.8.5 and finds all of them identical after the upgrade, with no role or digital grant; the full E2E suite passes on the upgraded install (163 tests) and on a fresh 0.8.6 install (171 tests).Fixes #480
