fix(switcher): ⌃+⌘+R leaves the Term tab behind - #164
Conversation
Background the app from the Term tab, press Ctrl+Cmd+R, and you were
back on Term. Ctrl+Cmd+T is the shortcut for Term; Ctrl+Cmd+R is for
the switcher, and Term is not the switcher.
Two separate causes, neither of them a state bug:
* "Default Tab" was read once, at app start, and passed to
createSwitcherWindow. Nothing re-applied it afterwards.
* quickSwitcherCallback only showed, hid or focused the window. It
sent no tab message at all, so the renderer kept its last mode.
Showing the switcher now leaves ONLY the Term tab, for the default
tab. A window parked on Projects or Sessions keeps its place, which
is the half worth keeping — this is not a reset-to-default on every
show. When the default tab is itself Terminal, the same branch stays
put.
Also fixes a smaller one on the way: a switcher window created BY the
shortcut (after every window was closed) called createSwitcherWindow
with no argument, so it carried no `#mode=` hash and ignored Default
Tab entirely. Both creation paths now pass it.
Formatting: the four touched files already carry 18 to 1814
prettier/prettier findings each and the repo has no lint gate, so the
new lines match their neighbours rather than the formatter.

<violation number="2" location="CHANGELOG.md:6">
P3: This bullet states the shortcut-created window "ignored Default Tab entirely," but the renderer already reapplies Default Tab on every window mount: `getDefaultSwitcherMode()` in switcher-ui.tsx switches the freshly mounted window to 'sessions'/'terminal' (and 'projects' is already the fallback), so a hash-less window always ends up on the configured default. The real pre-fix defect is that the window first rendered the fallback (Projects) tab and then jumped to the default once the async IPC resolved — a flash, not a permanent wrong tab. Reword the entry so the fix's claim matches the code.</violation>
<violation number="3" location="CHANGELOG.md:6">
P3: "Both creation paths now pass it" is not quite true: there is a third creation path. `app.on('activate')` (src/main.ts ~line 660) still calls `createSwitcherWindow()` with no initial mode, so a window re-created via the dock icon after all windows are closed (e.g. macOS destroyed the background window under memory pressure) starts on the renderer's 'projects' fallback even when the configured Default Tab is Sessions — the same bug class this fix removes from the startup and shortcut paths. Pass the default mode there too, or drop the absolute wording from the changelog.</violation>

All seven review findings were checked against the code and hold. * One reader for Default Tab (readDefaultTab): try/catch, because electron-settings rejects on a malformed file and the now-async shortcut callback would otherwise never open the window — a failure the synchronous callback did not have. Unknown values normalise to 'projects'. Startup, the Quick Switcher and app 'activate' all use it; 'activate' was a third creation path still passing no mode. * The tab message is sent before show/focus in the covered-window branch too, matching the hidden-window branch. * The renderer listener no longer fetches sessions: main-to-renderer messages arrive in send order, so the focus event that follows sees 'sessions' and refreshes once. Before, it refreshed twice. * CHANGELOG corrected: a hash-less window did NOT ignore Default Tab — the renderer re-applies it on mount — it flashed Projects first. Re-trigger cubic
cubic P2, verified half of it. In app 'activate' the count check ran before 'await readDefaultTab()' and the create after it, so two quick Dock clicks could both see zero windows and each create one — a race this PR introduced. The read now happens first, so check and create run in one tick, the same order quickSwitcherCallback already had. The second report (the same race in quickSwitcherCallback) does not hold: there the await precedes the check, and check and create share one synchronous continuation; new BrowserWindow registers itself synchronously, so a second press sees the first window. Background the app from the Term tab, press
⌃+⌘+R, and the Quick Switcher came back on Term.⌃+⌘+Tis the shortcut for Term;⌃+⌘+Ris for the switcher, and Term is not the switcher. Why it happened — two causes, neither a state bug
Settings → General → Default Tab was read once, at app start.
src/main.tsreadsdefault-switcher-modeand hands it tocreateSwitcherWindow(...)on launch. Nothing re-applied it afterwards, so the setting really meant "the tab the window opens on the first time it is created".The Quick Switcher callback never named a tab.
quickSwitcherCallbackonly showed, hid or focused the window. It sent no tab message at all, so the renderer kept whatevermodeit last had. CompareterminalCallback, which explicitly sendsswitch-to-terminal/check-terminal-and-hide— that is why⌃+⌘+Talways lands on Term, and that part is correct and deliberate. What it does now
Showing the switcher leaves only the Term tab, for whatever Default Tab names. A window parked on Projects or Sessions keeps its place.
⌃+⌘+RThis is deliberately not a reset-to-default on every show: that would bounce you out of Sessions every time whenever Default Tab is Projects, to fix a case that only ever involves Term. When Default Tab is itself Terminal, the window stays on Term — the same rule, not an exception, because the handler only moves when the target is a switcher tab.
A second, smaller defect fixed on the way: a switcher window re-created after every window had closed — by the shortcut, or by clicking the Dock icon (
app.on('activate')) — calledcreateSwitcherWindow()with no argument, so it carried no#mode=hash. The renderer re-applies Default Tab on mount, so such a window did end on the right tab, but only after briefly showing the Projects fallback. All three creation paths now pass it.One reader for the setting. Startup, the Quick Switcher and
activateall read Default Tab throughreadDefaultTab(), which catches a rejected read (electron-settings rejects on a malformed file — without this the now-async shortcut would never open the window) and normalises any unknown value to'projects'.Shape of the change
Four source files plus CHANGELOG, following the existing
switch-to-terminalwiring exactly: a newquick-switcher-leave-terminalmessage carrying the default tab (src/main.ts), the matchingonQuickSwitcherLeaveTerminalbridge (src/preload.ts) and its declaration (src/electron-api.d.ts), and one listener in the renderer (src/switcher-ui.tsx) that returns early unless the current mode isterminaland the target is a switcher tab.In every branch the message is sent before the window is shown or focused. Main-to-renderer messages arrive in send order and
window-focusis sent the same way, so the tab switches before the focus event — which then refreshes Sessions once. The listener therefore does not fetch on its own (it used to, which scanned twice).Checks
tsc --noEmitclean;yarn test209/209.yarn makeand the four cases in the table above (plus: close all windows, then press the shortcut, to exercise the second fix).package.jsonstill reads 1.0.74 → 1.0.75 against today's 1.0.92, and itsmain.tshunk is an import at line 30 — it never mentionsquickSwitcherCallback,createSwitcherWindow,default-switcher-mode,setModeormodeRef. It will need a re-cut against main regardless.prettier/prettierfindings respectively and the repo runs no lint gate, so the new lines match their neighbours rather than the formatter. The only non-formatting lint note on the added lines isno-explicit-anyon the newpreload.tsbridge, which is how every other bridge in that file is typed. No reviewer requested: this repository has one human contributor, who is also the author.

Fixes the Quick Switcher returning to the Term tab after
⌃+⌘+R. Default Tab was applied only when a window was created, and the switcher callback never sent a tab message, so a window parked on Term stayed there. Showing the switcher now sends aquick-switcher-leave-terminalmessage with the default tab; the renderer leaves Term only when the target is Projects or Sessions, so windows on those tabs — or a default of Terminal itself — stay put. This also fixes a window re-created after all windows had closed via the shortcut or the Dock icon, which previously flashed the Projects tab before jumping to the default.Bug Fixes
