Reject aspect and class map registration after proxy generation - #668
Conversation
Add AspectManager::clear() as the explicit operation for discarding compiled aspect chains, and delegate flushState() to it. Rule registries can invalidate derived chains when configuration changes without using the test cleanup API. Document the worker-wide lifetime and restrict this operation to bootstrap or tests. Leave chain lookup, storage, and dispatch unchanged. Validation: full static analysis and the AOP dispatcher suite passed with the completed registration changes.
Add explicit seal() and unseal() operations to the aspect collector. Reject registrations before mutating sealed rules, with an error directing callers to service provider register(). Reopening preserves existing rules; flushing restores an empty, open registry. Clear compiled chains whenever rules are added, reprioritized, removed, or reset so focused tests cannot reuse a pipeline compiled from old registrations. Keep all new checks at registration time, with no additions to method dispatch. Cover both registration entry points, rejection without mutation, reopening, cleanup, and dispatch results after each kind of rule change. Preserve the existing cache-reuse assertion for unchanged rules. Validation: collector and dispatcher tests, formatting, and full static analysis passed.
Give class map registration explicit seal() and unseal() operations. Reject late additions before touching registered entries or the Composer autoloader, directing callers to provider register(). Reopening retains existing overrides for repeated application bootstrap. Static cleanup removes overrides and returns registration to its initial open state. This prevents late replacements from bypassing generated proxies or being silently ignored because of autoloader ordering. Test that rejected additions preserve actual autoload behavior, reopening retains entries, and cleanup permits fresh registration. Validation: the class map test file, formatting, and full static analysis passed.
Document the explicit AspectCollector::unseal() step for tests that register aspects after their application has booted and invoke them through callWithAspects(). Reopen registration in the helper test fixture after parent setup. Keep the helper itself free of automatic registration bypasses so ordinary provider boot methods remain subject to the same lifecycle rules in tests and production. Validation: the InteractsWithAop test file passed, including its existing interception and already-proxied object coverage; formatting and full static analysis passed.
Explicitly reopen aspect registration before the PHPUnit extension installs temporary Guzzle proxy rules. ParaTest can load the extension after booting and terminating its process-setup applications, which leaves registration sealed. Use the existing finally cleanup to restore saved rules on success and failure. Avoid introducing seal-state snapshots or a getter for an application lifecycle that has already ended. Add regression coverage for entering proxy preparation with a sealed registry and for restoring saved rules when generation rejects an already-loaded target. Validation: the extension test file and focused parallel testing suites passed; formatting and full static analysis passed.
A failed replacement application can leave the test holding its previous app while container and facade globals still point to the flushed replacement. Subsequent facade calls and teardown then operate on the wrong application. Catch failures only around replacement creation. When a previous application exists, restore its container and facade application, discard resolved facade instances, and rethrow the original exception. Keep successful route setup outside this recovery path. Add a regression test whose replacement provider resolves Config before throwing a known exception. Assert the same exception is propagated and the test app, global container, app helper, facade application, and Config root all return to the previous application. Validation: the regression test, package-mode Testbench suite, formatting, and full static analysis passed.
Open aspect and class map registration at the start of provider registration, then seal both registries after successful application proxy generation. Close registration even when no aspects exist or no targets match. Applications and packages need no manual seal calls. Keep standalone generate() reusable without sealing. Update generation-only tests to call that API directly, and retain dedicated bootstrap coverage for empty, unmatched, and matching aspect rules. Exercise real provider boot rejection for both aspects and class maps. Cover reloadApplication() and refreshApplication() with reversed provider registration order, real promise proxy execution, retained overrides, and resealed registries. Validation: formatting, full static analysis, package-mode Testbench, dogfood, and the full framework suite passed. The final focused suite passed 308 tests with 854 assertions. One earlier full run stalled in a native worker; the isolated file completed and a fresh full retry passed unchanged. The hang was not reproduced and its cause remains unconfirmed.
Explain that aspect registration closes after application proxy generation and that registrations in boot() or later throw an exception. Clarify that registration closes even when no proxy files are needed. Update the focused testing example to reopen registration explicitly. Explain that reopening retains application aspects, cannot rewrite loaded classes, and relies on normal test cleanup to remove test registrations. Keep the existing guidance on early class loading, proxy fingerprints, and calling already-proxied objects. Documentation matches the verified bootstrap and focused-testing behavior.
State the shared registration deadline for provider aspects and class map overrides: call them from register(), before targets load and before proxy generation closes registration. Explain the exception raised by calls during boot() or later alongside the existing advanced-provider examples. No manual sealing API is required in those examples because application bootstrap owns the lifecycle. Validation: checked the guidance against both kernel bootstrap sequences and the provider boot regression tests.
Explain that class map override registration closes after proxy generation and rejects calls during boot() or later. Retain the immediate-autoload effect, unloaded-target requirement, same-source repeat registration support, and different-source rejection for loaded targets. Clarify that repeated overrides belong inside the registration window, including repeated Testbench application bootstraps. Validation: checked the wording against class map rejection tests and repeated-application bootstrap coverage.
Record the final ownership of registration windows, the small seal and unseal APIs, mutation-driven chain invalidation, and explicit focused-testing support. Include the PHPUnit preparation lifecycle and failed Testbench refresh recovery, with the reasons for keeping standalone generation reusable and avoiding extra state-management machinery or dispatch overhead. Mark implementation and verification complete and remove the stale uncommitted status. Keep this design record concise and separate from user-facing framework documentation.
Bring the branch up to date with origin/0.4, including Passport, scalar pluck fetching, transaction and cache handling, request context updates, and test infrastructure changes. The merge applies without conflicts and preserves the AOP registration lifecycle changes. Synchronize local Composer dependencies with the merged manifest; the local lock file remains untracked. Validation: the staged diff passes git diff --check and contains no unresolved conflicts. No test suite was run for this merge.

[High impact] Adds registration sealing to the aspect and class map system. The PR should not merge until failed Testbench refresh also restores the previous model connection resolver.

Model queries fail after recovery
When a provider throws during boot(), Testbench has already set Model's connection resolver to the replacement application's db service. Cleanup then flushes that application. This catch restores the container and facades, but model queries still use the flushed replacement and fail after the test catches the refresh error.
Save and restore the previous model resolver when recovering the application, and add a model query to the regression test.

The observation is reproducible, but restoring Eloquent's resolver is beyond the recovery provided here. A failed refresh rethrows the bootstrap exception. The previous container and facades are restored so framework teardown can run; the previous application is not guaranteed to support further application work after the failure.
Restoring Eloquent alone would not provide that guarantee: provider registration also replaces the request user resolver and pagination view resolver with callbacks that capture the replacement application. Rolling back individual globals would leave an incomplete recovery contract.
The existing teardown infrastructure uses the retained application and restored facades, and framework static state is reset between tests. We are therefore keeping the existing behavior. Commit 1ada627 clarifies the teardown purpose in the source comment and regression-test name. The test passes.

That distinction is valid. The recovery path is specifically to restore the retained application as the owner of the container and facades so teardown can complete, not to guarantee that the previous application remains usable after a failed refresh. Since restoring only Eloquent’s resolver would provide an incomplete rollback while other callbacks still capture the replacement, I’m withdrawing the finding. The clarified comment and regression test make the intended teardown-only contract clear.

Explain that restoring the previous container and facades allows framework teardown to run after replacement application creation fails. The original exception still propagates; this recovery does not promise that the previous application can resume normal use. Rename the regression test to describe the teardown guarantee while retaining its existing assertions. No runtime behavior, registration APIs, or state restoration logic changes. Validation: the renamed RefreshApplicationTest passes and git diff --check is clean.

Regarding the folded

Regarding the docstring-coverage warning in the main review comment: the new production methods have docblocks. This repository's We will keep the repository convention rather than add repetitive test docblocks to meet the percentage threshold. |
This makes late aspect and class-map registration fail immediately, with an error directing the caller to the service provider's
register()method. It follows up on the registration gap raised in the review of #656.Why
Aspect registration already belongs in
register(), before proxy generation. That requirement was documented but not enforced. Registering an aspect inboot()could do nothing, or it could appear to work if another aspect had already caused the same method to be proxied and its dispatch chain had not yet been cached. The result depended on which code had run first.Class-map overrides have the same deadline: an override registered after proxy generation can bypass a proxy or be ignored because of autoloader ordering. Both APIs now reject late registration before changing their registries.
Behavior
The framework manages the registration window automatically:
register().boot().Registration closes even when there are no aspects or no matching targets. Applications and packages do not need to call
seal()orunseal(). They continue using$this->aspects(...)and$this->classMap(...)fromregister().The bootstrap order is unchanged. This does not add an ordering requirement between providers' aspect registrations. Code that registers during
boot()or later now gets a clear exception instead of depending on incidental proxy coverage or cache state.Implementation and testing support
Each registry has a boolean seal, checked only when registering. There are no new checks in aspect dispatch and no added per-request work. Aspect rule changes clear compiled chains so subsequent calls cannot use an outdated list or priority order.
Repeated application bootstraps reopen registration without discarding existing entries, then close it again after generation. Standalone
GenerateProxies::generate()remains reusable without sealing registration.Focused tests that register aspects after application bootstrap explicitly call
AspectCollector::unseal(). This preserves existing application aspects and works withcallWithAspects(); it cannot rewrite classes PHP has already loaded. Normal test cleanup resets the registry. The PHPUnit extension also reopens registration while preparing its temporary Guzzle proxy rules and restores saved rules through its existing cleanup path. This also fixes a failure exposed while testing application refresh. When replacement application creation throws, Testbench retains the previous application but could leave container and facade globals pointing at the flushed replacement. It now restores those globals, clears resolved facades, and rethrows the original exception. Successful refresh behavior is unchanged.
The AOP, provider, and package documentation describe the enforced deadline and focused-testing API.
Validation
Regression coverage includes late registration from provider
boot(), rejection without registry mutation, empty and unmatched proxy generation, chain invalidation, repeated application bootstrap with reversed provider order, PHPUnit preparation failures, and failed Testbench refresh.Formatting, full static analysis, the framework suite, package-mode Testbench, and dogfood checks passed before merging the latest
0.4. After the merge, targeted DI/AOP, provider-bootstrap, AOP helper, PHPUnit extension, and Testbench refresh checks passed. The full suite was not rerun after the merge. One earlier full-suite run stalled in a native worker. An isolated rerun completed and a fresh full-suite retry passed unchanged; the stall was not reproduced and its cause remains unconfirmed.
Note
Reject aspect and class-map registration after proxy generation
AspectCollectorandClassMapManagergainseal(),unseal(), and invalidation of compiled chains;GenerateProxies::bootstrap()seals both registries after proxy generation, even when nothing is generated. Late registration fromboot()or later now throws (InvalidDefinitionExceptionfor aspects,RuntimeExceptionfor class-map overrides).RegisterProviders::bootstrap()reopens both registries so a new application boot can register providers, andflushState()on both managers reopens registration.AspectManager::clear()discards cached chains; accepted rule changes andforgetAspect()invalidate compiled chains automatically.InteractsWithAopsetup callsAspectCollector::unseal(), the PHPUnitAfterEachTestExtensionreopens registration before adding temporary Guzzle aspects, andTestCase::refreshApplication()restores the prior application, container, and facades if replacement creation fails.register(); calls fromboot()or later throw after proxy generation. Direct rule registration in focused tests requiresAspectCollector::unseal(). See AspectCollector.php and ClassMapManager.php.Macroscope summarized 1ada627.
