# 16 — Public web discovery in data-loading chat

The conversational `DataLoadingAgent` can discover public datasets with
[Parallel Search MCP](https://docs.parallel.ai/integrations/mcp/search-mcp).
`web_search` returns source URLs and excerpts; `web_fetch` reads page excerpts
when search results need clarification. Both are enabled for an unconfigured
installation and use `https://search.parallel.ai/mcp` over Streamable HTTP.
Anonymous search uses Fast mode and needs no account or API key. The free tier
has service limits; failures are returned to the agent without switching to
another provider or retrying anonymously after an authenticated failure.

This is a discovery step. It does not load tables or replace `find_data`, which
searches connected catalogs. `fetch_url` still downloads raw CSV, JSON, HTML and
other files to the confined scratch directory, using its existing SSRF checks.
The user still reviews the table preview before adding data to the workspace.

## Configuration and privacy

- `DF_WEB_SEARCH_ENABLED` defaults to `true`. `true`, `1`, `yes`, and `on`
enable both tools (case insensitive); other values disable them. The resolver
removes disabled tools from model requests and the dispatcher also denies
calls, including calls from old conversation history.
- `PARALLEL_API_KEY` is an optional server credential for higher limits. When
present, it is sent as a Bearer token only to the fixed MCP endpoint, never
in tool schemas, model arguments, prompts or returned errors. A blank key
selects anonymous access. Existing connector and model credentials are separate.
- Search terms and requested page URLs are sent to Parallel. The prompt and tool
descriptions restrict use to public data requested by the user and forbid
sending private rows, internal URLs or credentials. Operators serving private
data can disable discovery entirely.
- Page URLs must pass the existing public HTTP(S) SSRF validation and cannot
contain a username/password. The endpoint itself is fixed, not model supplied.
- Web results are untrusted. Return excerpts as tool data, cite source URLs,
and never obey instructions embedded in fetched pages.

## Caller and resource lifetime

`agents/parallel_search.py` owns tool definitions, input limits and MCP requests.
`DataLoadingAgent._call_llm` selects the tools; `_execute_tool` dispatches them;
the existing loop sends their result back to the model. UI progress labels use
the existing English/Chinese translation files. No new route or application
permission is introduced.

Each call opens an SDK `ClientSession`, initializes and discovers tools, then
executes the selected tool. An HTTP client bearing the project User-Agent owns
all discovery, search and fetch requests. The 30-second deadline includes the
MCP exchange; context managers close the session/client on success, failure,
timeout and asynchronous cancellation. The synchronous Flask stream retains
its existing cancellation behavior: closing it between events prevents later
tool calls; an already executing network call is bounded by the deadline.
Results are capped at 30,000 characters and carry a truncation flag. Raw
upstream exception text is not returned to the model or user.

## Validation and new-module checklist

Run `uv run python -m pytest tests/backend/agents/test_parallel_search.py -q`.
These tests use scripted model responses and the real MCP SDK against a mock
HTTP transport. They exercise dispatcher-to-model result consumption, anonymous
and configured access, endpoint and User-Agent, disabled discovery, argument and
URL validation, provider errors, timeout, cancellation and client cleanup.
They do not claim an autonomous live model evaluation.

When changing the integration:

- Keep `pyproject.toml`, `requirements.txt`, and `uv.lock` dependencies aligned.
- Preserve catalog search, raw downloads, explicit credentials and disable controls.
- Bound new arguments/results and avoid logging query text, keys or upstream bodies.
- Verify the actual HTTP requests and downstream model context, not only discovery.
- Update tool schemas, prompts, translations, configuration docs and tests together.
