A systemd user service can remain parked in start-limit-hit after its launcher has been repaired. Restarting or reinstalling it then fails until its failed state is cleared. This addresses the repair failure described in the latest comment on #12627.

Clear the failed state for the owned t3code.service unit before activating an existing service. Explicit restart and installation with start=true use this step; first-time installations skip it because systemd has not loaded the new unit yet. Reset failures remain visible and recovery still attempts the restart.

Validation: eight focused tests pass, including a parked service, repair installation, first installation with an unloaded unit, reset failure recovery, and command ordering. An independent focused run passes five tests. Scoped server typecheck, lint, formatting, and source review pass. The complete file passes 39 tests locally with three existing Windows fixture failures involving POSIX command rendering and fake runtime validation. Linux CI runs all 42 tests. Tests use a mocked process runner and do not operate a real service manager.

Refs #12627.

Linux Test Server 4 on 2643c80 passes the complete bootService.test.ts file (42 tests). All CI checks and CodeRabbit pass on that commit.

Review follow-up in b59ca8d25a: the reset uses the exact-match loaded-unit pattern [t]3code.service. An already-unloaded unit is an empty match; bus and genuine reset failures still propagate. This follows systemd's reset implementation and name expansion. It targets only the owned service and cannot reset all units.

Both installed repair and explicit restart regressions fail against 2643c80 with a reset error after the mock manager unloads the unit, then pass with this change. The strict reset-error/recovery test still passes. Scoped typecheck, lint, formatting, and diff checks passed; the full Windows file has 41 passing tests and three existing platform fixture failures. Latest CI and CodeRabbit passed on b59ca8d25a.

Implemented with GPT-6.1-Sol through the Codex harness in T3 Code.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at ce795dc

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a narrow systemd repair fix that clears the owned service’s failed state before restart, with focused regression coverage for restart, installation, and command failure handling. The test-only changes have no production runtime impact, and no product defaults or static-analysis suppressions are changed.

📝 Walkthrough

The boot-service manager now supports clearing manager failure state before activating an existing service. Systemd uses reset-failed; launchd has no reset step. New installs skip the reset. Tests cover start-limit recovery and reset command errors.

Changes: Systemd failed-state recovery

BootServiceManager now defines a resetFailed step sequence. Systemd runs systemctl --user reset-failed with a bracketed service pattern; launchd uses an empty sequence.

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to b59ca

No new merge-blocking issue is established by this review. The published unloaded-unit concern should be checked in its existing thread before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to b59ca

The change remains confined to the existing user-owned service and does not introduce a new external entrypoint or broader privileges. Recovery remains best effort, and combined failure behavior has not been validated against a real service manager.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — The new reset command is scoped to the invoking user's systemd manager and the fixed [t]3code.service pattern. Its unit selection contains no caller-supplied value and does not request system-level or all-unit reset authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The new step preserves existing command-error handling: spawn failures and nonzero exits become BootServiceCommandError and are logged. Reset failure is not silently treated as successful activation.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Restarting a cached launcher does not by itself prove that an older server runtime will be served: the current launcher reads service state and selects its activeVersion for the child process. This counters a stale-server inference, but does not establish the behavior of every previously deployed launcher.

Handle NoSuchUnit separately from genuine reset failures.

installed only checks fs.exists(unitPath). After manager.stop, systemd can unload an inactive unit while its valid file remains. reset-failed can then return NoSuchUnit.

Because resetFailed is strict, install({ start: true }) returns an error before activation. The recovery restart runs with Effect.ignore, so even a successful restart does not replace the original error. Skipping reset only for first installations does not fix this existing-but-unloaded case.

Ignore only the systemd NoSuchUnit result. Keep other reset failures fatal. The current BootServiceCommandError retains only output lengths, so the fix must preserve a reliable status or error distinction; marking the step optional would incorrectly hide genuine reset failures.
