The header scrolled off and the composer sat behind the keyboard. On phones the app shell now follows visualViewport height and offset, so the header stays put and the composer sits on the keyboard while the timeline shrinks. A coarse-pointer phone under 640px wide in landscape still matched the phone query, so it got the pinned shell and the document scroll lock. The check now also requires a portrait screen. It reads screen.orientation rather than an (orientation: portrait) query, because with interactive-widget=resizes-content an Android keyboard can make the viewport wider than tall and would switch the sync off mid-typing. Fixes #19512. iOS Safari ignores
interactive-widget=resizes-content, so when the keyboard opens on an iPhone onlyvisualViewportshrinks and Safari pans the page. The header scrolls off the top and the composer's bottom row lands behind the keyboard, because the shell and route insets are sized withh-dvh/h-svh.Change
On portrait touch phones (
(max-width: 639px) and (pointer: coarse)),useVisualViewportSyncwrites the visual viewport's height and pan offset to<html>and setsdata-viewport-sync, plusdata-keyboard-openonce more than 120px is lost. It updates onvisualViewportresize/scroll and window resize and stands down while pinch-zoomed. CSS keyed on those attributes:position: fixed) to the visible area below the top safe area.contain: layoutkeeps the header's fixed toggles inside it;sidebar-insetto that area instead ofh-dvh/h-svh, so every route gets it;html/bodyscrolling only while the shell is pinned (pairing/auth routes are unaffected);min(13rem, 40%)of the visible height and drops the bottom safe-area gap while the keyboard is open.The timeline is unchanged: the existing scroll anchoring keeps a reader at the newest message as its container shrinks. Desktop, narrow mouse windows, and landscape phones keep their current layout.
Scope and approval
Bug fix for #19512, filed alongside this PR. It has not been triaged yet. All changes serve the one problem of keeping the shell on the visible area when the iOS keyboard opens.
Verification
vp test run src/hooks/useVisualViewportSync.test.ts --project unit(apps/web): 12 passed. Covers measurement (no keyboard, iOS overlay, iOS pan, Chromium resize, toolbar collapse, pinch-zoom) and hook lifecycle (repeated keyboard cycles, rotation, scroll-only pan, cleanup on disable/unmount/zoom).tsc-rs --noEmitin apps/web passes;vp fmt --checkandvp lintare clean on the changed files.window.visualViewportand panning the page as Safari does. Before: header at y = -279, composer bottom 41px behind the keyboard. After: header at y = 0 to 52 and the form bottom 8px above the keyboard at all three widths, with no horizontal scroll.
