Remote file previews generated folder-shaped VS Code links, causing VS Code Remote-SSH to treat a file as a workspace folder and fail with ENOTDIR. Confirmed files now append :1:1 in VS Code-family remote URLs. Folder/project links, other editor protocols, and local editor RPCs retain their existing behavior.

Scope: maintainer-requested takeover of this focused, obvious bug fix. A remote file-preview action currently produces a directory-shaped URL and causes ENOTDIR; correcting that URL requires no new feature or product scope. The maintainer explicitly authorized rebuilding and publishing this PR in batch terminal-preview-18.

File identity comes from successful or cached contents, optimistic writes, or binary_file. A path_not_file response overrides retained contents; a temporary refresh failure keeps a known file marked as a file.

Rebuilt on current main while preserving @fixfon’s original commits and contribution in #19898. Removed a 184-line component mock and condensed nine added cases into two behavior tables (13 rows) in existing test files.

Validation at local head 69e9b1c4e5:

  • Before: fixed-base production fails both regression tables; the other 56 tests pass.
  • After: 58/58 focused tests pass in four files. Web/contracts typechecks and changed-file lint/format pass.
  • One independent full-diff review round by Claude Opus 5.5 and Codex GPT-6-Sol: no substantive findings.
  • Headless proof and limits: the running isolated app performed a real file read; clicking the preview’s actual Open button emitted the expected file URL through a captured shell boundary. Remote connection presentation and shell dispatch were fixtures. This verifies the query-to-picker handoff, not an actual SSH connection or native editor launch. The before proof is test output; a live base attempt restarted the app and timed out. Appearance is unchanged, so screenshots do not demonstrate this fix.

CI is green on published head 69e9b1c4e5, including web tests, all eight server shards, release smoke, build/typecheck and lint. The configured CodeRabbit review is automatically paused at the prior head; it was not retriggered. The two independent takeover reviews cover the published head. Native VS Code/Remote-SSH, Electron, macOS, Windows, iOS and Android were not verified on this headless Linux host. Mobile has no changed editor-link path. Human check: connect from a genuinely remote web client and Electron, preview text and binary files, open each in VS Code, and verify it opens the file without ENOTDIR; verify project/folder links still open folders and a temporary file refresh failure preserves file opening. Numeric-colon filenames retain the existing VS Code protocol limitation.

Implementation: Codex GPT-6.1-Sol; tests: Codex GPT-6-Astra; reviews: Claude Opus 5.5 and Codex GPT-6-Sol, through T3 Code delegated agents. Maintainer integration and proof: Codex GPT-6.1-Sol through the Codex harness in T3 Code.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at 51c8af4

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a narrowly scoped fix for remote VS Code-family links from confirmed file previews, with existing folder, local-editor, Zed, and JetBrains behavior preserved. The added production logic is small and covered by focused tests, with no product-default or static-analysis configuration changes.

📝 Walkthrough

The file preview now identifies whether its target is a file and passes that value to remote URL construction. VS Code-style URLs add :1:1 for file targets. Folder URLs and Zed and JetBrains URLs remain unchanged.

Changes: Remote file opening

Layer / File(s) Summary
File target classification
apps/web/src/components/files/projectFilesQueryState.ts, apps/web/src/components/files/projectFilesQueryState.test.tsx
ProjectFileQueryState adds isFile. The query derives it from file data and read errors. Tests cover successful reads, binary-file errors, path-not-file errors, and other failures.
Remote URL file target
packages/contracts/src/editor.ts, apps/web/src/remoteOpen.test.ts
buildRemoteOpenUrl accepts optional isFile and adds :1:1 to VS Code-style URLs for file targets. Tests cover file and directory targets, as well as Zed and JetBrains URLs.
Preview picker wiring
apps/web/src/components/files/FilePreviewPanel.tsx, apps/web/src/components/chat/OpenInPicker.tsx, apps/web/src/components/files/FilePreviewPanel.remoteOpen.test.tsx
FilePreviewPanel passes the target’s file.isFile value to OpenInPicker. The picker passes it to remote URL construction. Tests check file and folder URL forms.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to c3016

Known files retain file-opening links after a failed refresh, while paths identified as folders keep folder links. The change is ready to merge after normal checks.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to c3016

The change is narrowly scoped and preserves existing folder behavior for callers that omit the new option. The reviewed flow does not expand remote host selection or privileges. Remaining uncertainty concerns external editor behavior and incomplete security coverage.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The changed behavior is bounded to opted-in file-preview links for VS Code-family editors. Existing project-opening callers retain their prior behavior, and the reviewed change provides no new host-selection or privilege mechanism.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The reviewed path-to-editor boundary retains the existing remote host, host encoding, and editor-scheme selection. The added boolean supplies a fixed position suffix rather than additional host or command authority.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

#19859 is implemented for successful file reads, binary files, directories, and initial read failures. FilePreviewPanel passes isFile to OpenInPicker, and VS Code-family URLs append :1:1. However, useProjectFileQuery computes isFile from retained fileData without checking isPending. During a refresh of a previously read file, result.waiting can be true while cached contents remain available, so the preview can send a file URL instead of the required old folder-style URL. The tests cover refresh failures but do not cover this pending refresh state.

Resolution

Gate the file classification used for the preview on the query's pending state. Add a regression test that renders a previously read file while a refresh is pending and verifies that the remote URL has no :1:1 suffix.

Add a component-level regression test for the FilePreviewPanel handoff.

projectFilesQueryState.test.tsx tests isFile, and remoteOpen.test.ts tests URL construction directly. Neither test renders FilePreviewPanel. OpenInPicker.test.tsx renders OpenInPicker without openInCwdIsFile, so it only tests the default folder URL. These tests would not catch omitting or inverting openInCwdIsFile={file.isFile} at this call site. Add file and folder cases that trigger the preview action and assert the :1:1 and unmarked remote URLs requested by #19859.

A remote Open in VS Code, Cursor, Insiders or VSCodium from the file preview
built the same `vscode-remote` link as a project open. VS Code treats that
link as a folder unless the path ends in a position, so the previewed file
opened as an empty folder workspace and failed with ENOTDIR.

buildRemoteOpenUrl takes an optional `isFile` and appends `:1:1` for the VS
Code family only. Zed, JetBrains and folder/project opens build the same links
as before. The file preview passes `isFile` from useProjectFileQuery, which
reports a file only once a read returned contents or found a binary file, so
folders, pending reads and other read failures keep the old link.

Fixes pingdotgg#19859
Nothing rendered FilePreviewPanel, so dropping or inverting
`openInCwdIsFile={file.isFile}` on its OpenInPicker would pass every test.

Render the panel in remote-links mode with the real OpenInPicker and
buildRemoteOpenUrl, and assert the link the primary button opens: a file gets
the `:1:1` position suffix, a folder keeps the plain link.

A note on the red "Test Web" run for 5088770:

  • OpenInPicker.browser.test.tsx "closes an open picker on revocation and launches only after a fresh grant" is a flake. Locally it failed 4 of 8 runs on this branch and 3 of 8 with OpenInPicker.tsx reset to main, and the test runs in local-exec, where the new isFile value is never read. The assertion races Base UI's menu exit transition. Main fixed that in test(web): the open-in picker test waits for the menu to close #20892 (efef7cb), which landed after this branch's base. With that one-line test change applied, it passed 10 of 10.
  • The two projectScriptEditor.browser.test.tsx failures ("ignores a stale failure/rejection after the request changes") also fail on main at 812b700, this branch's base, and this PR doesn't touch that file.

The PR's own tests, reactCompilerCoverage.test.ts, and lint and format on the changed files all pass locally.

A refresh that fails keeps the last contents, so isFile depends on the
failure. Only path_not_file proves the path stopped being a file; any other
failure leaves the preview showing the same file, so its remote link must
stay a file link.

Pin both: a refresh failing with operation_failed after a good read keeps
isFile true, and one failing with path_not_file reports a non-file.

Taking over this one for batch terminal-preview-18. I’m resolving it against current main and rebuilding the smallest change for confirmed file-preview targets, with folder and other editor links preserved.

Reviewed the refreshed CodeRabbit pre-merge warnings against the published head 69e9b1c4e5.

The pending-refresh warning is a false positive. A successfully read file remains a confirmed file while its contents refresh; dropping its file identity during that interval would temporarily restore the broken folder-shaped link. The existing regression table explicitly covers pending refresh with AsyncResult.waiting(success) and expects isFile: true. An initial read remains unconfirmed, and a definitive path_not_file response overrides cached contents. The implementation follows that behavior. No code change is warranted.

The description now records the maintainer-requested takeover and obvious-bug scope exemption. Current CI is green. CodeRabbit remains automatically paused; the two independent takeover reviews cover the published head.
