Problem

When the active pending question only accepts one of its options (allowCustomAnswer: false), the web composer is disabled ("Choose an option above") and onPromptChange drops every keystroke. OpenCode 2 forms without a custom field and Antigravity option prompts both produce these. The user cannot tell the agent anything, such as "skip that and just answer without web search", without first picking an option or pressing Stop and then retyping.

Reproduction: an OpenCode thread where the agent hits OpenCode's "Allow OpenCode to search the web?" and then "Choose a provider for web search." forms. Neither card accepts text, and the composer won't take a single character until one is answered.

Change

  • Composer (ChatComposer.tsx): for a choice-only question, the editor stays enabled and is bound to the ordinary message draft, not the question's custom answer.
    • While the draft has content, the composer treats the question like the existing typing-guard hold for editor purposes. The question card stays visible and clickable.
    • Digits 1-9 still pick an option while the composer is empty (ComposerPendingUserInputPanel.tsx).
    • The placeholder says how to proceed, and the send button reads "Stop turn and send" or "Dismiss question and send" instead of "Steer message" (ComposerPrimaryActions.tsx).
  • Send (ChatView.tsx): sending that message first resolves the question the way the server already allows.
    • Questions with responseCapability: "message" are dismissed (thread.user-input.dismiss), and the user's queue/steer choice is kept.
    • Any other question holds its run until answered (thread.user-input.dismiss refuses it: "Answer it or stop the turn"). So the run that owns the question is interrupted, which cancels the question, and the message is queued behind it.
    • The interrupt is pinned to the question's run, using the new runId on ThreadPendingUserInput, and passes holdQueue: false, so the message runs next instead of waiting for Resume. InterruptThreadTurnInput.holdQueue defaults to true, so every other caller is unchanged.
    • A blocking question with no run refuses the send with an explanation instead of interrupting nothing. If the stop or dismiss fails, the draft is kept.
  • Unchanged: an empty draft plus Enter still answers with the selected option. Clicking an option no longer clears a draft that is in progress.

Out of scope, stated so nothing is implied:

  • Multi-select choice-only questions: the footer shows Send while a draft exists. Clear the draft to get Submit back. Showing both would make Enter ambiguous.
  • Typing-guard hold: a question that arrives mid-typing is hidden for about 1.5 s by the existing guard. A send during that hold behaves as before, so a question the user never saw doesn't stop their turn.
  • Native mobile: keeps its own design, which hides the composer for every question and has an explicit Stop button. Desktop gets this through web.
  • Difference from the Stop button: with holdQueue: false, the stopped run's delegated tasks are discarded but not sent delegated-tasks.stop, and PR watches are kept.
  • Leftover draft content: content already in the draft (chips, attachments) when a choice-only question arrives puts the composer straight into this mode. The content and the label are visible.

Scope and approval

There is no prior issue or discussion. I'm submitting this as a fix for an obvious bug: the composer silently drops every keystroke while a fixed-choice question is open, and the only way out is Stop followed by retyping.

I know the disabled composer was deliberate when Antigravity prompts landed (#9348), and that "Send stops the turn" is a behaviour choice. If you'd rather take the direction through an Ideas discussion first, I'm happy to open one and link it here. The change has no new settings, contracts or server code. The only shared-runtime changes are an optional holdQueue on the client interrupt input and the owning runId on pending user inputs.

Verification

  • Focused tests: vp test run on ComposerPendingUserInputPanel.navigation.test.tsx, ComposerPendingUserInputPanel.test.tsx, ComposerPendingUserInputPanel.permissions.test.tsx, ComposerPrimaryActions.test.tsx, pendingUserInput.test.ts, composerDraftStore.test.ts, client-runtime threadRequests.test.ts and commands.test.ts: all pass (219 tests). The new navigation test, where digits pick an option only from an empty composer, fails without the panel change and passes with it.
  • Type and lint checks: tsc-rs --noEmit passes for apps/web, packages/client-runtime and apps/mobile. vp lint on the changed files reports no errors and the same warning count as main.
  • Manual end-to-end check: vp run dev against an isolated home directory, with a live OpenCode turn (Muse Spark 1.3 Free) waiting on a question. OpenCode's search-permission form only appears on first use, so I made the live question choice-only with a temporary, uncommitted dev-only override (allowCustomAnswer: false in derivePendingThreadRequests), applied identically to the before and after runs. Everything else (the pending request, interrupt, queue and follow-up turn) is real.

Before (main): the composer is disabled and typing is refused.

Before: composer disabled with 'Choose an option above'

After: the composer is editable while the question card stays visible.

After: editable composer with the question still shown

After: a typed message past the question (the send button's label is "Stop turn and send").

After: message typed past the question

After send: the run waiting on the question is interrupted, and the message runs from the queue and is answered.

After send: run interrupted, message runs from queue

Not checked: the mobile-web collapsed composer on a real phone, Antigravity (not installed here), and a real message-mode choice-only question (the dismiss branch is covered by code review only).

Written by Claude Opus 5.5 in Claude Code (driven from T3 Code). Reviewed over three rounds by Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6.1-Sol.

CodeRabbit round: two findings, both addressed. (1) Digit shortcuts no longer pick an option when the composer holds only attachments or other non-text draft content. The panel now uses the same draft-content check as the composer's message mode, and the navigation test covers it: it fails without the fix. (2) The question is now dismissed, or its run stopped, only after attachment uploads succeed, so a failed upload leaves the question pending. Moving the skip after startThreadTurn was declined: the skip has to come before dispatch so the message isn't steered into, or queued behind, a run still blocked on the question, and a failed start already restores the draft. There is no ChatView send-flow test harness, so this move is covered by review, typecheck and the existing tests only.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

A question that only accepts one of its options (OpenCode forms without a
custom field, Antigravity option prompts) disabled the composer and dropped
every keystroke, so the only way to tell the agent anything was to pick an
option or press Stop first.

The composer now stays editable. Typed text or attached content becomes an
ordinary message while the question card stays visible and clickable, and
digits 1-9 still pick an option while the composer is empty. Sending the
message dismisses the question when the server allows it (message-mode
questions); otherwise it stops the run waiting on the question, pinned to
that run and without holding the queue, and the message runs next. The send
button says "Stop turn and send" or "Dismiss question and send" in that
state.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This PR changes the production send workflow for pending questions and can interrupt an active run while altering queue and delegated-work handling. Because the behavior spans the web composer, ChatView, and shared runtime orchestration, it requires human review.

📝 Walkthrough

The composer accepts ordinary message drafts while a choice-only question is pending. Sending a draft dismisses a message-answerable input or interrupts its associated run before sending. The composer also updates send labels, attachment handling, mobile controls, and digit shortcuts.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to a70f0

Users can type and send a message while a fixed-choice question is pending. The change dismisses the question or interrupts its run before sending. No concrete merge-blocking risk was identified; the message-mode dismissal path was not exercised manually.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to a70f0

The new flow reuses existing permissions and cancellation controls rather than granting additional authority. Its main limitation is that stopping a turn and sending the replacement message are separate operations: the turn can remain stopped if sending subsequently fails.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The new path exercises existing operator authority within the selected environment and thread. Interruption targets the identified run, but cleanup can also affect its delegated-completion cohort and related background provider turns in that thread; its practical effect is not necessarily limited to one question.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The dispatch RPC requires orchestration operate scope, and the WebSocket server installs authorization using the authenticated session scopes. Independently, dismissal rejects nonpending requests, approvals, and user-input requests without message capability. Run interruption resolves the supplied run within the command's thread projection.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — For an active provider session, interruption acceptance schedules a provider-interrupt effect rather than proving immediate provider termination. The replacement message is queued. With holdQueue false, the server does not apply the queue-hold and delegated-task-stop behavior used by ordinary Stop.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Consider coordinating option submission and skip-send with a shared request-scoped mutation guard, and revalidating pending-request state after upload waits. This would reduce stale cancellation decisions without implying an observed authorization bypass.

Do not trigger digit shortcuts for attachment-only drafts.

composerDraftHasUserContent treats attachments as composer content, but the keyboard handler checks only editor text. A digit can therefore answer the pending question while the attachment remains unsent in the composer.

- Digits no longer pick an option while the composer holds only
attachments or other non-text draft content, matching the composer's

- The question is dismissed, or its run stopped, only after attachment
uploads succeed, so a failed upload leaves the question pending.

Thanks for this. I'm closing it as part of PR triage. Another PR already covers the same fix.

From the review: Restoring ordinary message drafts while a fixed-choice question is pending overlaps with #17673. This version also introduces a separate stop-turn-and-send path.

If you think this was a mistake, message me on Twitter at @maria_rcks and I'll take another look.
