What

The three READMEs that models and people read first (the repo README and the npm READMEs for prisma and @prisma/cli) still describe the state before the 2026-08-25 cutover. This PR brings them in line with docs/oss/versioning.md. Text only, no code.

Changes and sources

File Was Now Source
packages/prisma/README.md, packages/cli/README.md, README.md, examples/hello-world/README.md npm install --save-dev prisma@next, pnpm add -D prisma@next, @prisma/cli@next plain prisma / @prisma/cli docs/oss/versioning.md, Dist-tag convention: "next — kept alive but no longer moved by the publish path (operator ruling 2026-08-25) ... New text should say plain prisma."
same three READMEs "The 8.0.0 release candidates publish as prisma on the next dist-tag." "... on the latest dist-tag." docs/oss/versioning.md: "every release publishes under latest, RC-line versions included (operator cutover ruling 2026-08-25 ...)". The root README's own Publishing section already says latest.
same three READMEs "public beta", "Beta of the unified Prisma CLI", "Install the beta package", "Beta notes" "release candidate", "Install the package", "Release candidate notes" docs/oss/versioning.md: "Prisma 8 ships as a release-candidate line ahead of 8.0.0 final". The npm READMEs already say "This is a release-candidate package" two lines below the old heading.
README.md, Command Model groups database and app postgres and service packages/cli/src/commands/ has auth, branch, bucket, git, postgres, project, service. The npm README's command table lists the same groups.

Why it matters

npm view prisma dist-tags on 2026-10-05:

next:   8.0.0-rc.10  (published 2026-08-25)
latest: 8.0.0-rc.20  (published 2026-10-05)

So the documented install command gives a reader a build that is ten release candidates old. The npm README is also what AI assistants read when they describe the Prisma CLI, and "public beta" is the wording they repeat.

Not in this PR

  • docs/reference/glossary.md line 29 still says the RC line publishes on next.
  • packages/cli/src/cli-command.ts sets PRISMA_CLI_PACKAGE_SPEC to @prisma/cli@next.
  • Whether to re-point the next dist-tag at the current release.

These are yours to decide. I left them alone.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

The READMEs told readers to install `prisma@next` and `@prisma/cli@next`
and called the CLI a public beta. docs/oss/versioning.md says every
release publishes under `latest` since the 2026-08-25 cutover, that
`next` lags, and that new text should say plain `prisma`. On npm today
`next` is 8.0.0-rc.10 and `latest` is 8.0.0-rc.20.

- Install commands use the plain package name.
- "public beta" becomes "release candidate", the wording the READMEs
  already use in their notes section.
- The root README's command list names `postgres` and `service`, the
  groups the CLI mounts, in place of `database` and `app`.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Updated CLI and Prisma guidance to describe the 8.0.0 release candidates and their availability under the latest tag.
    • Revised installation examples to use untagged package commands.
    • Updated the documented CLI command model to use postgres and service instead of database and app; bucket remains unchanged.

Walkthrough

The README files now describe the CLI and Prisma as release candidates. Installation examples no longer pin packages to @next, and the 8.0.0 release-candidate notes specify the latest dist-tag. The root README replaces the database and app command groups with postgres and service; bucket remains.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to da025

The READMEs now point to latest, but commands the CLI generates still use next, which may pull an older release candidate. The inconsistency is minor and can be fixed with a one-line change.

Use @latest for CLI package commands.

formatPrismaCliCommand defaults to a package invocation and appends @prisma/cli@next. Agent commands use this formatter. The release policy publishes RCs under latest and allows next to lag, so these commands can select an older RC than the README’s bare-package install path.

Suggested fix
-// `next` is the RC line's canonical dist-tag (docs/oss/versioning.md);
-// `latest` still serves the 3.x beta until the deliberate cutover, so a
-// hint spelling `@latest` would bounce users into the pre-8 command set.
-export const PRISMA_CLI_PACKAGE_SPEC = `${PRISMA_CLI_PACKAGE_NAME}@next`;
+// `latest` is the RC line's canonical dist-tag (docs/oss/versioning.md).
+export const PRISMA_CLI_PACKAGE_SPEC = `${PRISMA_CLI_PACKAGE_NAME}@latest`;
