Description

RNGestureHandlerButton keeps _underlayLayer at sublayer index 0 (since #4032). The button
component view mounted children with insertSubview:atIndex:, which counts every sublayer, so any
child mounted at index > 0 after the first layout was inserted one slot too low, behind its
preceding sibling. With view flattening, the children of a background-only View are hoisted into the
button after that View, so swapped content (e.g. a label ↔ ActivityIndicator) disappeared
behind the background. Fixes #4602.

This is also the root cause of the crash in #4062 ("Attempt to unmount a view which has a
different index"
). #4065 made unmounting skip the index check; this fixes the indices themselves.

This inserts relative to the sibling subview (insertSubview:belowSubview: / addSubview:),
which ignores sublayers that aren't backing views, and keeps the default implementation's
debug check that the child isn't already mounted. macOS is unchanged.

Test plan

  • New example Tests › Button child order: tap Toggle. Before, the RNGH columns go blank on iOS;
    after, they match the View column. Android is unaffected.
  • New Argent flow button-child-order-test compares the opacity row against screenshot
    baselines. It fails on main (1.64% diff) and passes with this change; the existing 6 flows
    still pass, in both Release and Debug builds.

Reproducer: https://github.com/radko93/rngh-button-child-order-repro

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

`RNGestureHandlerButton` keeps its underlay `CALayer` at sublayer index 0, and
`-[UIView insertSubview:atIndex:]` counts every sublayer. A child mounted into a
button after the first render was therefore inserted one position too low,
below the sibling it should cover. With view flattening that hides swapped
content (e.g. a label replaced by an `ActivityIndicator`) behind a
background-only View.

Insert relative to the sibling subview instead, which ignores the underlay.

Adds a "Button child order" test screen and an Argent flow that compares its
opacity row against screenshot baselines.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Corrected child rendering order inside buttons on iOS, preventing underlay layers from shifting child positions.
  • New Features

    • Added a Button Child Order example to the app’s Tests section, comparing how several touchable components display children as their state changes.
    • Added an iOS UI flow that checks the example in both toggle states.

On non-macOS platforms, the button mount path inserts children relative to sibling subviews; macOS retains its existing forwarding path. A common-app example compares child rendering across button wrappers and View. A UI flow toggles the example and captures the opacity row in both states.

Changes: Button child ordering

Sibling-relative child mounting

On non-macOS platforms, child mounting asserts that the child has no superview and inserts it relative to sibling subviews. macOS continues to forward mounting to _buttonView.

The example compares BaseButton, RectButton, and Touchable with View. Its toggle swaps a label for an activity indicator and changes label opacity. The UI flow toggles both states and captures the opacity row.

Title check Passed The title clearly describes the main iOS change: preserving button child mount order relative to the underlay layer.
Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

The iOS RNGestureHandlerButtonComponentView now checks that the child is unmounted and inserts it below the existing sibling subview or appends it. This avoids the _underlayLayer index offset and preserves child order. The shared native view covers the linked button variants, including animated and remounted children. The new example covers BaseButton, RectButton, Touchable, and View with label/spinner and opacity changes. The iOS Argent flow captures both remount states. The macOS implementation remains unchanged.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The native change directly implements issue #4602. The example registration, child-order example, and focused iOS snapshot flow provide regression coverage for the change. No unrelated production or test changes are shown in the reviewed scope.

What changed in this PR

Fixes iOS button child ordering so dynamically mounted content stays visible above background siblings, addressing #4602 while leaving macOS unchanged.

Changes:

  • Inserts children relative to sibling views, avoiding underlay-layer index offsets.
  • Adds a comparison example and an Argent screenshot regression flow.

The Android e2e job runs every flow too, and there are no Android baselines,
so the snapshot step failed with "no baseline". The bug is iOS-only, so gate
the two snapshots with `when: { platform: ios }`, like the Android-only steps
in native-intercept-cancellation-test.

🟡 Minor · Preserve Fabric clipping bookkeeping when… · RNGestureHandlerButtonComponentView.mm:164-169

packages/react-native-gesture-handler/apple/RNGestureHandlerButtonComponentView.mm:164-169
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Preserve Fabric clipping bookkeeping when mounting button children.

removeClippedSubviews is reachable because the button props extend ViewProps, and updateProps: forwards to RCTViewComponentView.

React Native tracks clipped children in _reactSubviews and mounts visible children through currentContainerView. This override always inserts into _buttonView.subviews and does not update _reactSubviews. When an earlier sibling is clipped, subviews[index] is no longer the logical Fabric sibling. A later mount can therefore use the wrong insertion point, and the new child is not tracked for clipping or remounting.

Use React Native’s mount implementation. The underlay is a CALayer, so it does not occupy a UIView subview index.

Suggested fix

 #if !TARGET_OS_OSX
-  react_native_assert(childComponentView.superview == nil && "Attempt to mount already mounted component view");
-

-    [_buttonView insertSubview:childComponentView belowSubview:subviews[index]];

@coderabbitai Thanks, I checked this against RCTViewComponentView, and I don't think it applies here:

  • super inserts into self.currentContainerView, which is this component view, not _buttonView (its contentView). Children would end up next to the button instead of inside it, outside its underlay and touch handling. unmountChildComponentView: only removes children whose superview is _buttonView, so it would never remove them.
  • The underlay is a CALayer, but -insertSubview:atIndex: counts every sublayer, so it does shift the position by one. That off-by-one is [iOS] Button children mounted after the first render end up behind their siblings (content goes blank) #4602.
  • _buttonView is a plain UIView. Its updateClippedSubviewsWithClipRect: only forwards the call to its subviews, so nothing ever clips the button's children. _buttonView.subviews always matches Fabric's children, and subviews[index] is the right sibling. Main already mounted straight into _buttonView without _reactSubviews, so this PR doesn't change how removeClippedSubviews behaves.

@radko93 Thanks for the detailed explanation. I withdraw this finding.

The local code confirms that _buttonView is the contentView and that unmounting requires children to belong to _buttonView. My recommendation to call super was incorrect for this component.

Your explanation also resolves the removeClippedSubviews concern. This change preserves the existing child container and replaces raw-index insertion with sibling-relative insertion. No change is needed for my comment.

Learning: In packages/react-native-gesture-handler/apple/RNGestureHandlerButtonComponentView.mm, Fabric children mount directly into _buttonView, which is assigned to self.contentView. unmountChildComponentView:index: removes children only when their superview is _buttonView. Calling the RCTViewComponentView superclass mounting implementation would target the wrong container. The button's UIView clipping traversal only forwards to its children, so sibling-relative insertion using _buttonView.subviews does not introduce a removeClippedSubviews bookkeeping regression.
