Description

Recordly lets users pick a screen, window, or supported area before recording, keeps that choice for the current app session, and requires a fresh choice after relaunch. The picker opens only on explicit actions, prevents source changes during recording, and lets users return from drawing an area to picking a window or screen.

Authenticated Account and Permissions settings are available in both the editor and Projects dashboard. Sign-in uses enabled Supabase providers or email magic links; settings support display-name and confirmed email changes, connected-provider display, global sign-out, and live macOS permission recovery.

The welcome heading and description are centered, with the Recordly logo inline before the name and no duplicate brand row.

Startup now shows a Home dashboard skeleton when opening Home and an editor skeleton when opening a project or recording, from the first HTML paint through module loading and project hydration. Supporting changes improve Linux source selection and portal cancellation, paused-frame motion blur and seek/resume behavior, and Golden Gate cursor artwork.

Motivation

Users should know what will be recorded, be able to recover missing account or system permissions, and see a loading layout that matches their destination.

Testing Guide

Validation on 13 October 2026:

  • npm run typecheck — passed.
  • npm test -- --maxWorkers=2 --reporter=dot --silent — 178 files and 1,567 tests passed. An earlier high-concurrency run timed out compiling the native Swift harness and in worker reporting; the isolated native lifecycle run and full rerun passed.
  • Focused unit checks for startup, capture selection, picker IPC, sources, and native recorder lifecycle — 48 tests passed.
  • Biome lint over the 20 changed TypeScript files — passed.
  • Playwright capture-picker and startup-loading suites — all 30 distinct scenarios passed across runs. The default five-second expectation timeout failed five slow-loading cases locally; all five passed when rerun with a temporary 20-second expectation timeout and one worker. No repository test configuration was changed.
  • npx vite build — renderer, Electron main, and preload builds passed; npm run smoke:electron-main-cjs passed.
  • git diff --check origin/main...HEAD — passed.

Welcome-header validation on 14 October 2026: typecheck, focused Biome lint, 15 auth unit tests, and all 22 distinct login/onboarding browser scenarios passed across runs. Two initial timeout failures passed on focused rerun with a 120-second test limit; responsive desktop/mobile screenshots were inspected. Microsoft and GitHub OAuth URL/PKCE flows passed with enabled-provider mocks. Live Microsoft/Azure and GitHub provider activation remains pending; the client already supports them, and only configured providers are offered. Earlier Linux capture and paused-motion browser coverage was not rerun for this header change.

CodeRabbit review follow-up: all picker-suite bridge overrides now use the existing order-independent setup helper, so the override safely runs before or after bridge defaults. The full picker suite passed again (21 scenarios, one worker, temporary 20-second expectation timeout). Focused Biome lint and diff checks passed; production code is unchanged by this follow-up.

Manually verify real email/OAuth callbacks, Account/Permissions from both dashboard and editor, fresh source selection after relaunch, screen/window/area selection and cancellation, source locking while recording/paused, and paused-preview playback. Browser checks mock the desktop bridge; real recording across all supported operating systems and packaged authentication callbacks are not covered.

Checklist

  • I have reviewed the code, with independent review of the startup and picker follow-ups.
  • Screenshots and relevant regression tests are included.
  • Related work and service setup documentation are linked.

Separate cloud/billing and portable-project branches, untracked prototypes, generated state, private workflow instructions, and the worksheet image are excluded.

"Select area or window" in the source menu opens a picker over every
display. Hovering highlights the window under the cursor, or the whole
screen over the desktop, and a click picks it. Dragging draws an area,
and moving or resizing any pick turns it into an area. Record, Enter or
a double-click starts recording, Select only picks, Escape cancels.

The window-list helper gains a --z-order mode that lists windows front
to back with their owner process, so the picker hits the frontmost
window and skips Recordly's own. A picked window or screen becomes the
same source the lists offer. An area becomes an area:<displayId> source
that the capture helper crops like a window that never moves, cursor
telemetry normalizes to, and a dashed outline marks while recording.
The main process validates every pick: a window must be one the picker
offered. Picker windows stay hidden until they have painted, so opening
the picker does not flash the app background.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- complete-capture-pick ignores any sender that isn't an open picker overlay
- when a pick fails for a reason other than cancel, like a window that
closed, the hud shows the message in a toast
- moving or resizing an area reads a flag on the drag itself instead of
react state, so a pointer move that lands before the next render still
counts as part of the drag

📝 Walkthrough

The pull request adds cross-platform capture-target picking, including macOS area capture. It replaces demo authentication with Supabase sessions and magic links, adds account settings and permission onboarding, changes recording-start cancellation, updates paused-frame motion rendering, and adds startup loading and staging configuration.

Changes: Capture selection and recording

Layer / File(s) Summary
Capture contracts, discovery, and validation
electron/ipc/types.ts, electron/ipc/sourceArea.ts, electron/ipc/captureSelection.ts, electron/ipc/capturePickerSources.ts, electron/ipc/register/sources.ts, electron/ipc/register/sourceMapping.ts
Capture picks support areas, windows, and screens. The code normalizes picks and validates selected sources against live platform sources. Discovery includes native macOS window ordering and Windows window bounds.
Picker flow and launch integration
electron/ipc/register/capturePicker.ts, electron/ipc/handlers.ts, electron/windows.ts, electron/preload.ts, electron/sourceListPicker.ts, src/components/capture-picker/*, src/components/launch/*
The app adds picker IPC handlers and transparent overlays. The renderer supports area drawing and resizing. Linux uses a source list. The launch window opens the picker, handles cancellation and failures, and synchronizes valid selections.
Recording and capture behavior
src/hooks/useScreenRecorder.ts, electron/ipc/register/recording.ts, electron/native/ScreenCaptureKitRecorder.swift, electron/ipc/cursor/*
Recording requires an explicit source and can cancel startup. macOS capture accepts a fixed area and shows its border during recording. Capture bounds and cursor normalization use selected-area geometry.
Capture verification and platform support
electron/ipc/*test.ts, electron/ipc/register/*test.ts, tests/ui/capture-picker.spec.ts, tests/ui/linux-capture.spec.ts, tests/ui/recording-startup-cancellation.spec.ts, README.md
Tests cover picker selection, validation, Linux behavior, area geometry, and startup cancellation. The Linux note distinguishes X11 source-list selection from the Wayland system picker.

Authentication and onboarding

Layer / File(s) Summary
Supabase authentication and account settings
src/lib/auth/*, src/components/auth/AccountSettings.tsx, src/components/auth/useRecordlyAuth.ts, src/components/auth/RecordlySignInDialog.tsx, tests/ui/auth.ts, tests/ui/login.spec.ts, tests/ui/account-settings.spec.ts
Authentication uses non-anonymous Supabase sessions, magic links, and enabled OAuth providers. Account settings support profile and email updates, connected identities, and sign-out. Demo-session support is removed.
Permission onboarding and settings
src/components/auth/Onboarding*, src/components/auth/RecordingPermissionsSettings.tsx, src/components/video-editor/SettingsPanel.tsx, src/components/video-editor/dashboard/DashboardSettings.tsx, electron/ipc/register/permissions.ts, tests/ui/onboarding.spec.ts
Onboarding adds Account and Permissions stages. Permission views check platform-specific access and provide settings entry points. Recording permission requests open the permissions flow.

Playback, startup, and supporting updates

Layer / File(s) Summary
Paused playback and motion rendering
src/components/video-editor/VideoPlayback.tsx, src/components/video-editor/videoPlayback/*, src/hooks/browserScreenCapture.ts, tests/ui/paused-motion.*
Playback resumes from current media progress. Frame samples drive camera and cursor blur on paused frames. Browser capture retries without audio under the configured fallback conditions.
Startup loading views
electron/editorStartupView.ts, electron/windows.ts, index.html, src/components/video-editor/dashboard/HomeLoadingSkeleton.tsx, src/App.tsx, src/components/video-editor/layout/EditorShell.tsx
Startup resolves to Home or editor from session state and startup inputs. Loading screens match the selected view.
Staging and supporting changes
services/recordly-share/worker/*, services/supabase/*, electron/ipc/cloudShareContract.ts, playwright.config.ts, src/assets/cursors/*, src/components/launch/MarqueeText.*
The change adds staging configuration and setup records, accepts the staging share origin, and updates cursor assets, cursor labels, and marquee behavior.
