Description

On macOS, if the window you're recording closes or is minimized, Recordly now asks Keep Recording or Discard instead of silently dropping the footage. Keep runs the existing recovery and opens the editor. Discard (or a failed recovery) falls back to the old behavior and reopens the source picker.

  • New IPC confirm-keep-interrupted-recording (native dialog; Enter/Escape keep the footage)
  • Decision logic is in a small resolveWindowUnavailableInterruption helper with unit tests
  • capture-stopped interruptions are unchanged

Motivation

Before this change, window-unavailable skipped recovery, so a long recording looked lost even though the file was still on disk.

Testing Guide

🙏 Needs a macOS tester. I wrote and tested this on Windows, so I couldn't run the macOS flow end to end.

  1. Start recording a single window (not the full screen).
  2. After a few seconds, close or minimize that window.
  3. Check that a "Recording window closed" dialog appears and comes to the front.
  4. Keep Recording: the editor opens with the footage, webcam and audio.
  5. Repeat and choose Discard: the source picker reopens and there is no extra alert.

Automated: npx vitest --run src/hooks/useScreenRecorder.test.ts; npm run typecheck and npm run lint pass.

Checklist

  • I have performed a self-review of my code.
  • I have added any necessary screenshots or videos.
  • I have linked related issue(s) and updated the changelog if applicable.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • When the recording window becomes unavailable, you can choose to keep or discard the interrupted recording. Keeping it attempts recovery; discarding it removes the recording and opens the source selector.
    • If discarding fails, you’ll see an error message. If recovery fails, you’ll see an alert and can return to the source selector. Other recording interruptions continue to follow their existing recovery flow.

📝 Walkthrough

Window-unavailable recording interruptions now use a keep-or-discard confirmation. The recorder attempts recovery when the user keeps the recording or confirmation fails. Electron IPC connects the confirmation and discard operations. The macOS discard path removes capture output and associated files.

Changes: Interrupted recording handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Native capture-output discard
electron/ipc/recording/mac.ts, electron/ipc/recording/mac.test.ts
A shared path resolver selects the active capture output or eligible macOS diagnostics. The discard function removes the selected video, telemetry, and resolved audio sidecars, then clears native capture diagnostics. Tests cover path selection, removal, and missing sidecars.
Electron confirmation and discard API
electron/electron-env.d.ts, electron/ipc/register/recording.ts, electron/preload.ts
The Electron API exposes confirmation and discard methods. The IPC handlers show a keep-or-discard dialog and invoke native discard on macOS.
Interruption resolution and handling
src/hooks/useScreenRecorder.ts, src/hooks/useScreenRecorder.test.ts
The resolver returns recovered, discarded, discard-failed, or recovery-failed. For a window-unavailable interruption, the recorder uses the resolver, opens the source selector after discard, and displays an error toast if discard fails. Tests cover confirmation, recovery, and discard outcomes.

Explanation

Issue #1125 requires duration-based handling for window-unavailable: short recordings reopen the source selector, while longer recordings prompt to keep or discard and recover when kept. The PR routes every window-unavailable interruption through resolveWindowUnavailableInterruption. The helper has no duration input, and the added tests do not cover a short-recording branch. The keep, discard, recovery, and failure paths are implemented, but the short-recording requirement is not met.
