WalkthroughAudioReactive adds ESP-IDF 5 I2S support and continuous ADC analog microphone input. It retains ESP-IDF 4 paths and uses capability-based guards for analog microphone configuration. ESP32-C5, C6, and P4 environments now inherit the shared audioreactive usermod setting. ChangesAudioReactive ESP-IDF compatibility

@softhack007 @willmmiles I have spent a lot o hours debugging the ADC continuous mode, turned out (once more) it is an IDF bug. It is fixed though but we need to move to a newer IDF version. I tested tasmota from April and that worked (but did not compile for risc V) as well as the lastest one from May which works and compiles also for riscV. Using the lastest there are two minor include issues. Is there a good reason not to move to the lastest? (if we do not, analog mics wont work) |
I'm generally in favor of moving to new IDF versions promptly in So as far as I'm concerned, go for it. |
@DedeHai in this case, I think we should update to latest. In previous releases we had some good reason to "hold on to what we've got", but the current framework version(s) we use are just a random pick from 3 months ago. Make sure to also update the "pioarduino" platform to latest, the C5 doesn't work with tasmota. BTW, this may add some urgency to solving the lwip crash I've observed on C5 only #5048 (comment) - might be triggered by some config changes in esp-idf 5.5.x: The relevant call chain is: |
|
@softhack007 I do not have a C5 to test. Do you have time to do this update? I am not too familiar with all the background processes and did a bit of a local hack to get it to compile (by commenting whatever code did throw include errors). |
|
@DedeHai yes I have one C5 for testing, I can do the updates in the next days. OK if I use this PR for modifying platforms.ini ? |
There was a problem hiding this comment.
@DedeHai Just wondering if we should split audio_source.h into two files: audio_source_legacy.h (for V4) and audio_source_new.h (for V5 / V6). I think it would save us a ton of '#ifdef'. We can still keep the common part in audio_source.h, and include either the legacy audiosource driver instances (V4) or the new driver instances (v5).
This would also help me for AR out-of-tree ... WLEDMM has lots of added drivers - with two separate include files, I could migrate drivers one-by-one to the new API, and still have the previous driver for back-to-back testing.
What do you think?
I would make a new PR as it is not really related to this one - and it needs a bit of include fixing as I saw errors in time lib and dmx lib due to some define conflicts. About the driver split: I don't think its worth it at this point for this AC version but that is a good idea for the OOT version - actually we could split things up even more - a core version and then do filters, frequency processing etc (FFT vs. IIR bandpass) so features can be easier maintained and pulled to MM or AC. I already wrote the above proposed "ADC manager" and it works. That is currently implemented as a library in AC, should be quite easy to port it to MM. I just need to run some more tests on it and maybe do some cleanup before a PR. I should have time in about two weeks to do more work on OOT AR usermod to port the changes from this PR - if you could define a structure with multiple files until then that would be a great starting point to merge this and maybe also add the bandpass code I have. |
|
@softhack007 I did run tests using this code and it seems solid, at least after adding the ADC manager. I had an AI churn at the out of tree AR UM to bring in the changes from this PR and it did succeed to the point where it compiles for V5. I still need to run tests and check how it did solve it all.
I did not add the ADC manager integration yet. Not sure how long it will take me to test and review but once I have it I will do a PR to MM and we can hopefully finally move to the OOT AR so this PR may become obsolete before it is merged ;) |
|
@softhack007 since the out of tree AR will take a lot more work I will merge this as an interim solution. As this code will finally be replaced by OOT there is no benefit in delaying the merge, we might get feedback on it once nightly builds are reenabled. |

OOT is V4 based, it needs these updates anyway. AI can do the heavy lifting in updating the lower level stuff to V5. @softhack007 is MM staying on V4 or also moving to V5? My ADCmanager code only works on V5 with the unified ADC API, for V4 it would need to be written a bit differently as different ESP's use different APIs. |
Add support for all ESPs on V5.
I2S is updated to the new API, tested and working on ESP32 and C3
The I2S "ADC" interface is no longer supported, instead the normal "continuous sampling" ADC interface is used. As a bonus of using this, all ESP32 variants now support analog mics as the API is the same. ESP32 still uses I2S DMA sampling as before, just the interface changed.
Tested analog input on C3, ESP32 and C6 - fully working both with and without I2S_GRAB_ADC1_COMPLETELY.
There is one issue though: even if not using I2S_GRAB_ADC1_COMPLETELY, analogRead() wont work. In order to make it work, the continuous ADC would have to be deinitialized and re-initialized each loop. Doable but not a pretty solution - and not the one we should use. What would be much better is so actually use continuous sampling in the background and only stop that if something wants to use the ADC - i.e. pin manager or battery usermod (or some other usermod) which read at intervals of 250ms or even more. In order to do this, we need an ADC manager (or a general hardware manager) that handles it properly instead of having the AR usermod set up the ADC and having to free it just in case something else wants to use it.
edit:
this is an intermediate solution and this code should be migrated to the out-of-tree AR usermod in a next step.
edit2:
forgot to mention: I did not check if the V4 path still works or if there are any misplaced ifdefs for that
