Problem

#17637 holds an incoming question while you type, but once the question shows it still takes the composer: the editor becomes an empty answer field, Send becomes Submit, and nothing on the panel leads back to the message short of answering. A question that arrives while you pause takes the editor at once. On main at 5fe9d024d9 I typed "Also keep the README short, and", paused, the question took the editor, I typed " add a license line at the end." and pressed Enter: Claude got "add a license line at the end." as its answer, and the first half came back as a draft.

Change

The question panel gets an outline xs button: Back to message while the composer holds the answer, Answer question while it holds the message.

Web and desktop share this composer. The native mobile questionnaire is a separate surface and is unchanged, as in #17637. No server, contract or provider changes; every provider's questions use this panel. If #15538 lands, a SnapShot taken while on the message goes to the message draft: #15538 routes SnapShots into the question only through pendingUserInputs, which this change limits to answering.

Scope and approval

Julius's comment closing #15519 invites it: "If you think the explicit Answer question / Back to message path is still worth having on top of that, feel free to open a fresh PR against current main that builds on #17637." The direction is from his triage on #11116: an explicit "answer this question" path on the question panel. This builds on #17637's seam in ChatComposer and leaves its hold as it is. The open #11337, #13865 and #13336 change other question paths in the same files and do not overlap.

Verification

Dev desktop app (vp run dev:desktop), fresh state with a throwaway project, real Claude turns (Claude Opus 5.5) told to run sleep 25, ask with AskUserQuestion, and quote what they receive. macOS 27, Node 24.21.0. Before and after were recorded on 5fe9d024d9; the branch then rebased onto 38571328a4 without conflicts, and the checks below were rerun there. On 2026-10-17 upstream/main at 70d60e03a7 was merged in: #20161 had moved the question handlers out of ChatView (the caret guard went with them into usePendingThreadRequests.ts), and #20397 had removed ChatComposer's manual memoization (the toggle follows its useStableCallback shape). The merge adds this PR's two panel props to upstream's new ComposerPendingUserInputPanel.navigation.test.tsx and upstream's cwd and threadRef props to this PR's permissions case. The tests (275 passed across those seven files), lint, format and the web typecheck were rerun on the merged branch; the dev desktop app checks below are from 2026-10-10 and were not retaken.

  • New tests for composerStateForReturningDraft in apps/web/src/composer-logic.test.ts. With the helper returning the end, as main does, the restore case fails (31 instead of 5). A further case checks that a caret saved for another draft is ignored, so a thread whose draft happens to hold the same text comes back at its end rather than at the other thread's caret. A case in ComposerPendingUserInputPanel.permissions.test.tsx checks that Back to message stays enabled after the operate grant is revoked while Answer question is disabled; it fails on the first commit. vp test run src/composer-logic.test.ts src/components/chat/ComposerPendingUserInputPanel.test.tsx src/components/chat/ComposerPendingUserInputPanel.permissions.test.tsx src/components/chat/composerTypingGuard.test.ts src/pendingUserInput.test.ts src/components/ChatView.logic.test.ts in apps/web: 253 passed.
  • vp run --filter @t3tools/web typecheck: clean. vp lint on the changed files: the same warnings as main. vp fmt --check: clean.
  • The steps above with the change: the question took the editor as before, now with Back to message, which returned the message with focus and the caret where it was. The rest of the message and Enter queued it whole. Answer question brought back the answer field; "Formal, but warm" and Enter answered. Claude quoted the answer, then the queued message went out whole.
Before: the question takes the editor, with no way back After: the same, with Back to message on the panel
Before: the question takes the editor, with no way back After: the same, with Back to message on the panel
Before: Claude gets half the message as its answer After: the answer, then the whole message
Before: Claude gets half the message as its answer After: the answer, then the whole message
after-recording.mp4
  • Caret: with the caret after "short" when the question took the editor, Back to message put it back there, and " and clear" landed mid-sentence. Clicking Casual while on the message answered in one click (Claude quoted it) and left the message and caret as they were.
  • Hold: typing through the question's arrival kept it hidden for 3 more seconds; it showed 1.6 s after the last key, matching fix(web): pending requests wait until you stop typing #17637's 1.5 s idle.
  • At 390 px the button works in both modes, including the collapsed mobile composer, which shows the full panel with Answer question while on the message.

The recording is a screencast of the dev window, cut between typing and the question's arrival; frames longer than 2.5 s are capped.

Not checked: Codex questions (same client path), approvals (unchanged), Windows and Linux, the native mobile app, and SnapShot routing with #15538 applied (by reading). After an answer submits, the editor loses focus as on main, so typing appends at the end through type-to-focus; the restored caret shows through Back to message.

Claude Opus 5.5 and Claude Fable 5.1 via T3 Code

Once a pending question showed, it took the composer with no way back to the
message short of answering. The panel now offers Back to message and Answer question.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This PR adds a new user-facing composer mode that switches between a pending question and the message draft, affecting caret restoration, attachments, sending, and compaction behavior across the shared web/desktop composer. The scope is focused and preserves the existing default, but the cross-component mode switch lacks full integration coverage, warranting human review.

📝 Walkthrough

The composer can show a pending question while the user edits the message draft. The user can switch between the answer and message modes. When the user returns to an unchanged draft, the composer restores its saved caret and trigger state.

Changes: Pending question composer

Layer / File(s) Summary
Restore the message draft
apps/web/src/composer-logic.ts, apps/web/src/composer-logic.test.ts, apps/web/src/components/chat/ChatComposer.tsx, apps/web/src/components/chat/usePendingThreadRequests.ts
ChatComposer saves the message prompt and caret outside answer mode. The composer logic restores the saved caret and trigger when the target and text match; otherwise, it places the caret at the prompt end. Option selection clears prompt and cursor state only while answering pending input.
Pending question answer-mode controls
apps/web/src/components/chat/ChatComposer.tsx, apps/web/src/components/chat/ComposerPendingUserInputPanel.tsx, apps/web/src/components/chat/*test.tsx, docs/user/question-attachments.md
The panel switches between “Answer question” and “Back to message.” ChatComposer wires the mode state and renders the panel for a shown question, including on mobile. Tests cover the control props and disabled-state behavior. Documentation describes the two controls.
Pending-question presence checks
apps/web/src/components/chat/ChatComposer.tsx
Drawer visibility and blocking account for shown pending questions. Compaction is blocked when any incoming pending user input exists.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 30fca

The reviewed composer changes have no established issue requiring a fix before merge. Normal checks remain appropriate.

Security architecture risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 30fca

The reviewed change keeps message editing separate from question answering while preserving existing submission permissions and response targeting. No material security risk was identified in the changed flow.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The reviewed mode change affects the active web editor and its current draft/request selection. Even if the request-ID-only mode preference persists across navigation, the inspected flow does not use it to retrieve another thread's answer data or choose response authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The existing response handler requires orchestration operate scope, verifies that the request is pending and resumable, and submits explicit environment, thread, and request identities. The PR's option-click change only conditions editor clearing on answer mode; it does not replace these controls.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Response dispatch retains its environment/thread/request in-flight guard, blocks while question attachments are preparing or unavailable, and removes the in-flight marker after the command returns. Returning to message mode also does not remove the pending-input compaction block.

It only switches which draft the composer shows, so losing the grant to answer
should not keep the user in the answer field.

Merged upstream/main (70d60e03a7) in 45df8ce44b, so this is mergeable again. Two things had moved under it. #20161 took the question and approval handlers out of ChatView into usePendingThreadRequests.ts, so ChatView.tsx is back to upstream's version and the option-click caret guard now lives in that hook, where the handler reads composerRef. #20397 removed ChatComposer's manual memoization, so the Back to message toggle follows the file's useStableCallback shape; the shadow split, the panel sites, compaction and the caret effect merged by themselves. Two test files needed props: upstream's new ComposerPendingUserInputPanel.navigation.test.tsx gets isAnswering and onToggleAnswering, and this PR's permissions case gets upstream's cwd and threadRef. The diff against main is nine files (+174 −14).

Rerun on the merged branch: 274 passed across the seven test files, lint (only upstream's existing panel warning), format and the web typecheck clean. The dev desktop app checks in the description are from 2026-10-10 and were not retaken.

…d for

The saved caret outlived a switch to another thread, so a draft there with
the same text came back at the first thread's caret position.
