See #666.

The handbook is generated from the nightly build, so it documents commands and options that haven't been released yet, such as wp block. Readers aren't told this. This PR keeps nightly as the source and marks anything that isn't in the latest stable release.

How it works

  • wp handbook gen-all and wp handbook gen-commands accept a new option, --stable-phar=<path>.
  • When it is given, the generator runs cli version and cli cmd-dump with that Phar. It runs them outside the handbook directory, so the handbook's wp-cli.yml isn't loaded. It then compares each generated page against the stable command tree:
    • Command missing from stable: the page gets a note.

Note: This command is not part of a stable WP-CLI release yet. To use it now, switch to the nightly build with wp cli update --nightly. If you installed the command as a separate package, updating that package may be enough.

    • Command exists, but with fewer options in stable: the page lists the new options in a similar note ("The following options are not part of a stable WP-CLI release yet: --format. …"). Option names come from the synopsis, parsed with SynopsisParser.
  • The note doesn't name a version, so flagged pages don't change on every release just because the number moved.
  • Commands that already accepted arbitrary options in stable ([--<field>=<value>], e.g. wp post list) are not flagged for newly documented options, since those options probably worked already.
  • Alias pages reuse the note of the command they point to. Stable's cmd-dump doesn't output aliases, so a new alias can't be detected on its own.
  • Unreleased command pages get "unreleased": true in commands-manifest.json. The website could use this to show a badge on the commands index. The manifest reads it from the generated Markdown, so the separate Regenerate Manifest workflow keeps it too.
  • The Regenerate Handbook workflow now downloads wp-cli.phar (stable) and passes it to the generator. Prerelease Phars are rejected as the stable reference.

The non-bundled packages (admin, find, profile, dist-archive) are loaded from bin/packages for both builds, so they are never flagged. The notes go away on the first regeneration after a release, with no manual cleanup.

Without --stable-phar, the output is unchanged.

Testing

I ran the generator locally against nightly (3.0.0-alpha) and stable 2.12.0. The non-bundled package check was disabled for that run because GitHub package downloads were blocked in my environment. Results:

  • 119 pages flagged as unreleased commands, including block, ability, ai, font, icon, site-health, post block, post revision and user privacy-request.
  • 44 pages flagged for new options. I spot-checked some, e.g. core update --format, against wp help from stable.
  • Passing the nightly Phar as --stable-phar fails with "Not a stable WP-CLI release".
  • Without --stable-phar, no notes are added.

A follow-up PR stacked on this one, #669, adds "Available since" information.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Handbook pages can identify commands and options that are not available in the latest stable release. Commands absent from that release are marked as unreleased, and unavailable options are noted when applicable.
    • Handbook generation can use the latest stable release as a reference when creating command pages.
  • Documentation
    • Updated handbook guidance to explain how generated pages distinguish nightly-build content from stable-release content.

The handbook is generated from the nightly build, so it can document
commands and options that are not released yet (e.g. `wp block`).

`wp handbook gen-commands` / `gen-all` now accept `--stable-phar=<path>`.
When given, the generator dumps the commands of the stable Phar and adds
a note to every command page that is missing from it, or that documents
options missing from it, pointing to the nightly build. Commands that
already accepted arbitrary options in the stable release are not
flagged for newly documented options.

Unreleased commands are also marked with `"unreleased": true` in the
commands manifest.

The regenerate workflow downloads the latest stable Phar and passes it.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The handbook generator accepts an optional stable WP-CLI Phar as a reference. It compares generated command data with that reference, renders notes for commands or options absent from it, and marks pages for unreleased commands in the manifest.

Changes

Stable release comparison

Layer / File(s) Summary
Supply the stable Phar
bin/Handbook_Command.php, .github/workflows/regenerate-handbook.yml, README.md
gen-all and gen-commands accept an optional --stable-phar path. The workflow and README download the latest stable Phar and pass its path to handbook generation.
Load and compare stable command data
bin/Handbook_Command.php
The generator validates the Phar version and command dump, extracts command and option data, and selects release notes for commands or options absent from the stable reference. It omits option notes for commands that accept generic options.
Render notes and mark unreleased pages
bin/Handbook_Command.php, bin/templates/subcmd-list.mustache
Command-page generation binds the selected release note. The template renders the note when present, and the commands manifest sets unreleased: true when a page contains the unreleased-command note.

A note about a newly added short option alias can show the wrong spelling. Correct the note before merging, or accept this bounded documentation risk.

Avoids loading the handbook's wp-cli.yml (and with it the handbook's
Composer autoloader) into the stable Phar, and keeps PHP notices out of
the JSON output of `cli cmd-dump`.

"Not available in the latest stable release (2.12.0)" reads as if the
command should be in 2.12.0. Say it's not part of a stable release yet
instead, which also keeps flagged pages from changing on every release.

🟡 Changes recommended

Option aliases are omitted from comparison, allowing some nightly-only option spellings to remain unflagged.

🧠 Review effort: Balanced

Nightly synopses can declare option aliases, e.g. `[--dbpass|db_password=<dbpass>]`.
Treat every alias as an option name, so a newly added alias like
`config create --db_password` is flagged as unreleased as well.
