Show in which release commands and options first appeared - #669
Conversation
The handbook is generated from the nightly build, so it can document commands and options that are not released yet (e.g. `wp block`). `wp handbook gen-commands` / `gen-all` now accept `--stable-phar=<path>`. When given, the generator dumps the commands of the stable Phar and adds a note to every command page that is missing from it, or that documents options missing from it, pointing to the nightly build. Commands that already accepted arbitrary options in the stable release are not flagged for newly documented options. Unreleased commands are also marked with `"unreleased": true` in the commands manifest. The regenerate workflow downloads the latest stable Phar and passes it. See #666. Avoids loading the handbook's wp-cli.yml (and with it the handbook's Composer autoloader) into the stable Phar, and keeps PHP notices out of the JSON output of `cli cmd-dump`. Adds `bin/command-history.json`, which records for every bundled command and option the stable release it first appeared in. Command pages now show "Available since WP-CLI X.Y.Z" and "Options added later: ..." based on it. Nothing is shown for things that were already part of the oldest recorded release. `wp handbook gen-commands --stable-phar=...` records the stable release on every regeneration, so the history keeps itself up to date. The new `wp handbook update-command-history <phar>...` command can backfill it from older releases. The history was backfilled from all releases since 2.4.0, the oldest release that still runs on PHP 8. See #666. 📝 Walkthrough
Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to History updates can fail on malformed history data, and an installed package can produce inaccurate availability notes. These bounded issues should be fixed or explicitly accepted before merging. Pre-merge checks |

Start new history entries at the recorded release instead of null, so `since` is always a string. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01RVPkwDuM5DHXdSF4YW4qqr
Comparing against a nightly Phar would silently drop the notes. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01RVPkwDuM5DHXdSF4YW4qqr

"Not available in the latest stable release (2.12.0)" reads as if the command should be in 2.12.0. Say it's not part of a stable release yet instead, which also keeps flagged pages from changing on every release. - Line 29: Clarify the release note that `bin/command-history.json` records the
first bundled WP-CLI release in which each command or option appeared, not the
minimum version that provides it when a package is updated independently; note
that independently updated packages may expose commands earlier.

Nightly synopses can declare option aliases, e.g. `[--dbpass|db_password=<dbpass>]`. Treat every alias as an option name, so a newly added alias like `config create --db_password` is flagged as unreleased as well. - Around line 556-563: Update load_command_history to normalize decoded history
before returning it: always include baseline as a string or null and commands as
an array, using null and an empty array for missing or invalid values. Preserve
the existing fallback for invalid JSON.
- Around line 309-315: Update load_stable_reference() to call
dump_phar_commands() with the option that excludes installed packages, so
record_command_history() stores only bundled commands and options.

Adds "Available since" information to command pages, so readers can tell whether their installed version has a command or option.
How it works
bin/command-history.jsonrecords, for every bundled command and option, the first stable release it appeared in:wp plugin auto-updates: Available since WP-CLI 2.5.0.wp user check-password: Options added later:--escape-chars(2.5.0).baseline, currently 2.4.0). For those, "since 2.4.0" really means "2.4.0 or earlier", so showing it would mislead.[--<field>=<value>]), for the same reason as in Flag commands and options not in the latest stable release #668.--stable-pharfrom Flag commands and options not in the latest stable release #668 records the current stable release in the history. The history keeps itself up to date and ends up in the automated "Update handbook" PR, so no workflow changes are needed.wp handbook update-command-history <phar>...backfills from older releases. Releases can be given in any order, and the oldest release is kept for each command and option. It runs with--skip-packages. Non-bundled packages (admin, find, profile, dist-archive) are never recorded, because a bundle version means nothing for them.Backfill
The history was backfilled from 2.4.0, 2.5.0, 2.6.0, 2.7.0, 2.7.1, 2.8.0, 2.8.1, 2.9.0, 2.10.0, 2.11.0 and 2.12.0. Releases before 2.4.0 crash on PHP 8 during bootstrap, so 2.4.0 is the baseline. The result covers 415 commands: 35 added after 2.4.0, and 110 options added after their command.
Testing
wp helpfrom the release Phars. For example,--escape-charsis missing fromwp user check-passwordin 2.4.0 and present in 2.5.0.command-history.json.Caveat
The version shown is the WP-CLI bundle release, not the package's own version. If someone updates a single package on its own, they can get a command earlier than the bundle version shown. The README says so too.
